Introduction
One of the most persistent details in the Cash–Landrum incident is the claim that the witnesses saw 23 helicopters accompanying or surrounding the unidentified object. Unlike other elements of the story that became more elaborate over time, the number itself appeared early and remained remarkably stable in later retellings. That consistency makes it historically significant, but it does not make the count automatically accurate.
The available record suggests that “23” endured because it entered the case very early, was repeated in interviews and publications, and became part of the narrative before memories had diverged substantially. At the same time, the circumstances under which the count was made—a frightening night-time event involving moving aircraft, intense heat, emotional stress and intermittent visibility—mean that the figure cannot be treated as independently verified.
The Hospital Recording and the First Count
The earliest documented appearance of the number comes from the witnesses’ recorded statement made at Parkway Hospital in early February 1981, only weeks after the alleged encounter. John Schuessler later reproduced portions of that recording in his investigation, noting that Betty Cash said she counted 23 helicopters after the witnesses had driven farther down the road and stopped again. Early summaries of the testimony are also revealing because they contain fewer later interpretive additions. In Schuessler’s initial account, Betty described counting 23 helicopters with ordinary main and tail rotors and believed they were military, but she did not initially describe a formation composed primarily of Chinook transport helicopters or report reading specific military markings on every aircraft. This distinction matters. The stability lies chiefly in the number, not necessarily in every descriptive detail attached to the helicopters.
How Later Accounts Preserved the Number
By the time of the taped interview with Air Force representatives at Bergstrom Air Force Base in August 1981, the count of 23 had become a recognised part of the witnesses’ narrative. When questioned, Betty Cash again stated that she had counted 23 helicopters after stopping farther along the road. However, the interview also contains an important qualification that is often overlooked.

That exchange demonstrates two things simultaneously:
- Betty consistently associated herself with a count of 23.
- The witnesses did not all remember exactly the same number.

What Night-Time Counting Can and Cannot Prove
A stable number should not be confused with an objectively verified count.
Psychological research on eyewitness memory shows that highly emotional experiences often preserve the overall impression of an event while reducing precision in estimating quantities, distances and durations. The Cash–Landrum witnesses described:
- darkness interrupted by an intensely bright light;
- moving aircraft seen from changing positions;
- repeated stops beside the road;
- extreme heat and physical distress; and
- considerable fear.
Those conditions are poor for accurately counting numerous moving objects.
The Bergstrom interview itself reflects this limitation.
