A persistent question in discussions of the Cash–Landrum incident is whether the object was reported to have one broad flame beneath it or several separate exhaust jets. The distinction matters because later illustrations often portray the object with a neat, symmetrical cluster of rocket-like nozzles, implying an observer could clearly identify multiple engines. The surviving witness testimony does not support that level of visual precision. Instead, Vickie Landrum repeatedly explained that the glare was so intense she could not distinguish individual flames. That difference is important because it limits what can legitimately be inferred from the witnesses’ observations. Many later books, magazine illustrations and online recreations depict the Cash–Landrum object with a sharply defined conical exhaust emerging from a central point or from several evenly spaced jets.
These images have considerable visual appeal because they create a coherent mechanical picture. However, they also introduce a level of geometric certainty that is absent from the recorded witness interviews.
