Although all three witnesses described a similar general pattern of illness, the severity differed markedly.

Betty Cash consistently described the most extensive symptoms. According to her statements, she experienced burning skin, extreme thirst, swelling, severe weakness, headaches, gastrointestinal distress, blistering, later hair loss and repeated hospital treatment. Possible reasons for unequal severity

No single explanation has been demonstrated, but several factors could account for the reported differences.

Betty may have experienced the greatest exposure

The explanation most often discussed by investigators is simply that Betty Cash placed herself closest to the reported object.

According to the witnesses’ accounts, Cash left the vehicle, remained outside longer than the others and was directly exposed to intense heat while standing near the road. Vickie largely stayed inside the vehicle because she was caring for Colby, while the child remained inside throughout most of the encounter. Another possibility is that the witnesses’ underlying health affected how they responded.

Betty Cash acknowledged during the Air Force interview that she had previously undergone heart surgery and a hysterectomy. Vickie reported relatively little prior serious illness. Children’s symptoms can differ from adults’

Colby’s age introduces another complication.

Children often describe illness differently from adults, particularly when recalling events months later. His interview focused mainly on stomach pain, diarrhoea and feeling as though he had a severe viral illness the following morning. Why the symptom differences do not identify a specific cause

One reason the differing accounts remain controversial is that they are compatible with several competing explanations.

If the witnesses experienced:

  • Unequal thermal exposure, the person closest to the source might reasonably be expected to suffer the most severe skin injuries.
  • Exposure to a toxic substance, differences in dose could likewise produce differing outcomes.
