Introduction
One of the most revealing moments in the August 1981 Bergstrom Air Force Base interview concerns a point that is often simplified in later retellings of the Cash–Landrum incident. Although Betty Cash repeatedly described helicopters bearing what she believed were United States Air Force markings, Vickie Landrum explicitly refused to say that she had identified the helicopters as Air Force aircraft. Instead, she drew a careful distinction between recognising the type of helicopter and knowing who owned or operated it. That distinction is important because it shows how the witness herself separated observation from inference during an official interview, even though later accounts frequently merge the two into a single claim.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Did Landrum Say the Helicopters Were Air Force?
The clearest evidence comes near the end of the recorded interview. Captain John Camp attempted to summarise the witnesses’ account by stating that they had seen an unidentified object “being accompanied by some helicopters which you believe to be from the United States Air Force”. Before he could continue, Vickie Landrum interrupted him:
“I don’t say it’s from the Air Force… I didn’t see no sign… no name on them or nothing…”
Rather than accepting Camp’s summary, Landrum immediately corrected it. Her response demonstrates that she did not consider herself able to identify the helicopters’ ownership from what she personally observed.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
This exchange is significant because it occurred during a formal claims interview where precision mattered. Had Landrum wished simply to support an Air Force ownership allegation, she had an obvious opportunity to agree. Instead, she qualified the record.
Camp’s Summary and Landrum’s Correction
The interview shows that the witnesses were not identical in what they claimed to have seen.
Earlier in the interview:
- Betty Cash stated that she saw markings which she interpreted as “United States Air Force”.
- Air Force personnel questioned her closely about exactly what the markings looked like and even asked her to write down what she remembered seeing.
- Vickie Landrum did not endorse Cash’s description when later given the opportunity.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
When Camp later tried to summarise the testimony collectively, Landrum corrected the record immediately. Her objection was not that helicopters were absent, but that she herself had not seen markings proving Air Force ownership.
The correction therefore distinguishes between:
- Cash’s testimony, which included claimed Air Force markings.
- Landrum’s testimony, which did not.
That difference is often lost when later narratives refer simply to “the witnesses” identifying Air Force helicopters.
Aircraft Shape Was Not Proof of Ownership
Landrum did not claim ignorance about the helicopters themselves. Instead, she explained why she recognised their general appearance while rejecting conclusions about ownership.
She recalled seeing a similar twin-rotor helicopter during a local event in Dayton, where National Guard personnel had arrived for a parade. She described speaking with those present and becoming familiar with the unusual helicopter’s shape. During the Bergstrom interview she even produced photographs to illustrate the type of aircraft she meant, noting that one photograph showed an Army National Guard helicopter.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
Her reasoning was straightforward:
- she recognised the distinctive twin-rotor configuration;
- she knew such helicopters existed in military service;
- but recognising the aircraft type did not establish which organisation operated the helicopters seen during the incident.
This is a more cautious position than later summaries sometimes imply.
Why the Distinction Mattered
The ownership question was central because the witnesses hoped to pursue compensation from the United States government. For such a claim, merely observing military-style helicopters was not enough. There would need to be evidence linking those aircraft to a federal agency.
The interview reflects this legal context. Air Force personnel repeatedly asked about markings, wording, numbers and identifying features rather than relying on general descriptions of military helicopters. Their questions suggest they were trying to determine whether the witnesses possessed evidence capable of identifying a specific operator rather than simply recognising military-looking aircraft.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Landrum’s correction therefore had practical consequences. By saying she had not seen any identifying name or insignia herself, she declined to strengthen a point that would have supported the ownership allegation.
Later Accounts Became More Definite
Many later books, documentaries and popular summaries describe the helicopters more confidently, often stating that they were Air Force helicopters or implying that all three witnesses agreed on that point. The Bergstrom recording shows a more nuanced picture.
The interview preserves three separate levels of observation:
- Betty Cash said she believed she saw Air Force markings.
- Vickie Landrum recognised twin-rotor helicopters but denied seeing markings identifying them as Air Force.
- The Air Force interviewers treated ownership as an unresolved factual question rather than an established fact.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Subsequent government inquiries likewise failed to identify evidence showing that the reported helicopters belonged to the Air Force or another branch of the US military, despite efforts to compare witness descriptions with known military aircraft and flight activity.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgUFOs at close sight: the Cash-Landrum case, 1980, USAF memo 1/4, Sarran…
What Landrum’s Statement Contributes to the Historical Record
Landrum’s correction is valuable because it illustrates the care with which she distinguished observation from assumption. She claimed familiarity with the appearance of twin-rotor helicopters but stopped short of identifying their operator without having seen markings.
For historians and researchers, this makes the Bergstrom interview especially important. Rather than relying on later recollections or condensed retellings, it preserves a contemporaneous exchange in which a principal witness explicitly rejected attributing Air Force ownership based solely on aircraft appearance. That distinction remains one of the clearest examples of the witnesses’ testimony being more nuanced than many later summaries of the Cash–Landrum incident suggest.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
