Introduction
The reported heat damage to Betty Cash’s 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass has often been presented as one of the strongest pieces of physical evidence in the Cash–Landrum incident. However, one of the most significant weaknesses in that evidence is chronological rather than technical: the vehicle was not examined promptly. Why the Car Was Absent From the Interview
The Bergstrom interview was arranged after Cash contacted U.S. Senators Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower seeking assistance with her reported injuries and property damage. The meeting was intended primarily to record testimony and explain the military claims process rather than conduct a forensic investigation. What Evidence Can Change Over Eight Months
The long delay substantially reduced the evidential value of the car regardless of whether the witnesses were completely accurate, partly mistaken or entirely mistaken. Many forms of physical evidence naturally degrade or disappear over months of ordinary ownership.
Paint can weather, oxidise or receive routine repairs. Interior vinyl and padded dashboards change with age, sunlight and temperature cycling. Mechanical faults may be repaired, replaced or develop independently of any earlier event. Dirt, fingerprints and transient residues disappear through ordinary cleaning and use.
Equally important, investigators lose the ability to establish a reliable chain of custody. Once an object has remained under normal use for many months, it becomes difficult to determine whether any observed condition originated during the reported incident or resulted from subsequent wear, maintenance or unrelated damage.
From a forensic perspective, the delay meant that almost every possible observation became more ambiguous. Even if investigators later found an unusual feature, demonstrating that it originated on the night of the encounter would have been considerably harder than if it had been documented immediately.

The timing also affected the human evidence. Because the car itself was unavailable for immediate testing, investigators could not use physical observations to confirm or challenge individual memories about:
- the precise location of alleged dashboard impressions;
- the extent of any paint damage;
- whether mechanical faults were still present;
- whether any thermal effects were consistent across different parts of the vehicle.
Instead, the physical object largely disappeared as an independent source of evidence, leaving witness testimony to carry much greater weight.
How Immediate Documentation Could Have Helped
An examination during the days immediately following the incident would not automatically have proved the witnesses’ account, but it could have answered several important questions objectively.
Investigators could have photographed the entire vehicle under controlled conditions before repairs or further weathering occurred. They could have measured paint thickness, inspected the dashboard material, examined rubber seals and plastic trim for abnormal heat degradation, and documented any unusual deformation with scale photography.
Mechanical inspection could also have established whether the reported engine problems corresponded to identifiable electrical or thermal damage or instead reflected ordinary automotive faults. If investigators suspected unusually intense heating, samples from affected materials might have been preserved for later laboratory analysis.
None of those opportunities existed eight months later. By then, the evidential question had shifted from “What does the car show?” to “What do the witnesses remember the car showing?”
How the Delay Shaped Later Assessments
Later investigators reached differing conclusions about the Cash–Landrum incident, but there has been broad agreement on one methodological point: the vehicle was never preserved as high-quality physical evidence.
Supporters of the case have argued that investigators lost a rare opportunity by failing to document the alleged heat effects while they were fresh. Skeptical writers, meanwhile, have pointed to the delay as one reason the vehicle cannot serve as strong corroboration for extraordinary claims.
