Introduction
No publicly disclosed radiation reading from the Cash–Landrum incident confirms that the road, Betty Cash’s car, the witnesses’ clothing or the witnesses themselves carried abnormal radioactivity. That absence is decisive. Symptoms may suggest possible exposure, but without timely measurements there is no quantitative bridge between the reported encounter and a specific radiation source, dose or pathway.

The surviving record shows that investigators eventually considered radiation and that Texas health officials reportedly surveyed the suspected area months later. Yet the precise encounter location was uncertain, the scene had not been secured, potentially useful objects had remained in ordinary use, and no preserved pre-cleaning samples established what conditions were like immediately after 29 December 1980. The result is not proof that radiation was absent. It is a permanent evidential gap that prevents radiation exposure from being confirmed, measured or confidently excluded.
What should have been tested
A suspected radiation incident requires two distinct enquiries. Investigators must determine whether radioactive material contaminated people or objects, and whether ionising radiation exposed the body without leaving contamination behind. These are not the same thing. Someone can receive external radiation from a nearby source without becoming radioactive, while radioactive dust or liquid can remain on clothing, skin, soil or vehicle surfaces after the source has gone.
In the Cash–Landrum case, the most useful immediate investigation would therefore have included several parallel measurements.
The witnesses should have been surveyed before washing or changing clothes. A portable radiation meter could have checked their hands, hair, shoes, exposed skin and clothing for contamination. Current emergency guidance calls for recording the location and level of detected contamination, carefully removing and preserving clothing, resurveying the patient and collecting samples when internal contamination is possible. The clothing should have been isolated and analysed. Cash reportedly used part of her coat to touch the hot car door, making it especially relevant to both the heat and contamination claims. Clothing, shoes and fabric fibres could have been checked with survey instruments and, where warranted, laboratory gamma spectroscopy to identify particular radionuclides. Instead, no publicly available chain-of-custody record shows that garments were promptly bagged, labelled, preserved and submitted to a qualified radiation laboratory.
The car required a documented surface survey. Investigators could have mapped readings across the bonnet, roof, doors, tyres, wheel wells, seats, dashboard, ventilation system and air filter, comparing them with local background levels and an uncontaminated control vehicle. Wipe samples could have tested whether removable contamination was present. The air filter and ventilation ducts would have been especially valuable if airborne particles had entered the passenger compartment. The road and surrounding vegetation needed an early, gridded survey. Investigators should have established the location as accurately as possible, measured natural background radiation away from the alleged hover point, and then surveyed the road surface, verges, drainage channels, soil, pine needles and damaged-looking vegetation. Samples should have been labelled by exact position and depth. A single meter sweep performed later cannot substitute for a mapped survey with controls, instrument details, calibration information and laboratory results.
Medical testing needed to address dose, not merely symptoms. Sequential complete blood counts can reveal changes in lymphocytes after substantial whole-body exposure. Cytogenetic biodosimetry examines radiation-associated chromosome damage and can estimate dose when physical dosimeters are unavailable. No disclosed dataset shows that this complete package was performed promptly. The surviving case therefore contains reported symptoms and retrospective interpretations, but no exposure measurement comparable to a dosimeter reading, contamination count or defensible biological dose estimate.
Why the later site survey could not recover the baseline
The Texas Department of Health’s Bureau of Radiation Control became involved only after the witnesses had contacted public officials, many months after the event. Case researcher Curt Collins reports that the bureau searched the general vicinity and did not detect abnormal residual radiation. A Houston public-health official, Russ Meyer, was quoted as reasoning that substantial radioactive contamination should have left some detectable residue. The largest problem was location. During the August 1981 interview at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Cash and Landrum identified the incident broadly as occurring on Farm-to-Market Road 1485 between New Caney and Huffman, but Cash could not place the site precisely on the map available to the interviewers. Later researchers have continued to dispute the exact stretch of road. Time also changes what can be detected. Rain, traffic, road maintenance, wind, vegetation growth and ordinary movement of soil can disperse surface contamination. Radionuclides decay at different rates: some remain measurable for years, while others diminish rapidly. Consequently, a negative reading months later weighs against a large, persistent contamination event but says much less about short-lived radionuclides, an external radiation beam or a transient non-radioactive source of intense heat.
The reported scene was never preserved as a baseline dataset. There is no published table showing:
- the exact coordinates and survey grid;
- instrument model, calibration date and detection threshold;
- measurements in counts per minute or dose rate;
- comparison readings from unaffected nearby areas;
- soil, water or vegetation sample results;
- weather and rainfall between the incident and the survey;
- photographs fixing every sampling point;
- an independently verified chain of custody.
Without those details, the later survey can only support a limited conclusion: investigators did not report finding persistent abnormal radiation in the places they examined. It cannot establish what radiation levels were present on the night itself.
The car and clothing were evidence that steadily deteriorated
Cash’s Oldsmobile was potentially the most valuable physical object in the case. It was present throughout the reported encounter, allegedly became intensely hot, enclosed two of the witnesses for much of the event and may have collected whatever particles were in the air. Yet it was not immediately impounded, sealed or examined under controlled laboratory conditions.
Ordinary use would have degraded almost every relevant trace. Rain and washing could remove material from the exterior. Passengers could transfer contamination between seats, clothing and household surfaces. Dust and road debris could introduce unrelated radioactive minerals. Repairs or replacement of filters, upholstery or tyres could destroy sampling opportunities. Even where later examination found nothing unusual, investigators would lack a reliable way to distinguish “nothing was ever deposited” from “something was deposited but was subsequently removed”.
The same problem applies to the reported dashboard deformation and heated door handle. Temperature-sensitive labels, paint analysis, polymer testing and metallurgical examination might have helped estimate whether the car experienced unusual heating. However, such testing would have required prompt photography, measurements, control samples and knowledge of the materials’ prior condition. A soft or damaged dashboard observed weeks later cannot by itself quantify the temperature reached or identify the source of heating.
Clothing offered an even shorter evidential window. Radiation-response guidance recommends preserving removed garments because they can hold contamination and serve as evidence. Medical records could document illness, not reconstruct the source
Cash’s hospital treatment makes the case more substantial than an account based solely on memory. It establishes that she was ill and that clinicians recorded physical findings. It does not, however, turn a radiation hypothesis into a measured exposure.
Acute radiation syndrome is assessed through the timing and progression of symptoms, serial blood-cell counts, dose reconstruction and, where possible, physical or biological dosimetry. Some effects often mentioned in the Cash–Landrum narrative—nausea, skin redness, eye irritation and hair loss—can occur after radiation exposure, but they are not unique to it. A strong radiation claim would ideally include a dose estimate consistent with both survival and the reported pattern of injury. Very rapid vomiting after a whole-body exposure can imply a high dose, while severe whole-body doses should produce characteristic changes in blood cells and bone marrow. Localised exposure could injure skin without causing the same systemic pattern, but would require a plausible geometry explaining which body areas were irradiated and how the car altered the exposure.
Published discussions mention medical opinions, retrospective record reviews and possible chromosome testing, but no accessible, complete laboratory dataset has established an absorbed dose in grays, an equivalent dose in sieverts or a specific radionuclide in the witnesses. Later summaries sometimes describe the illnesses as “documented radiation injuries”, yet that wording goes beyond what can be demonstrated from the missing measurements. How missing measurements limit every theory
The absent data do not only weaken an extraterrestrial or secret-aircraft explanation. They prevent meaningful discrimination among all proposed causes.
Ionising radiation from an unknown object would be strengthened by elevated scene readings, identified radionuclides, contaminated clothing, a vehicle survey or a biological dose estimate matching the symptoms. None has been publicly demonstrated.
A powerful external beam might leave little or no contamination, so a clean road would not automatically exclude it. But the theory would still need dose reconstruction, a credible radiation type, a geometrical explanation and medical findings proportional to the witnesses’ differing positions and exposure times.
Radioactive particles or fallout should have prompted identifiable contamination patterns in clothing, the car, air filters or environmental samples. A delayed negative survey weakens a large persistent release but cannot rule out material that dispersed, decayed or was removed before testing.
Microwave, infrared or other non-ionising energy could produce heat without making objects radioactive. In that scenario, radiation counters might correctly show nothing, but calibrated thermal damage, burn distribution, eye findings and material analysis would become essential. Those baseline measurements are also missing.
Chemical exposure would require toxicological sampling of blood, urine, clothing, soil or vehicle residues. Because samples were not preserved promptly, later chemical theories face the same retrospective uncertainty as the radiation claim.
An unrelated or pre-existing illness remains possible because symptoms are not source measurements. Establishing that alternative would require full medical histories, early clinical records, differential diagnosis and comparison with the expected course of thermal, chemical and radiological injury.
The central evidential failure is therefore broader than a missing Geiger-counter reading. No coordinated response preserved the scene, objects and biological samples in a form that could compare competing explanations. Each theory can appeal to part of the narrative, but none can be tested against a complete contemporaneous dataset.
What the negative evidence actually establishes

First, no publicly available instrument reading proves that the witnesses received ionising radiation. Third, that negative result was obtained too late, with too much uncertainty about location and prior conditions, to exclude every form of radiological exposure.
This distinction matters because “no confirmed radiation trace” is not equivalent to “radiation was conclusively ruled out”. The former accurately describes the evidence. The latter claims more certainty than the investigation can bear.
The incident’s radiation question remains unresolved not because measurements produced a baffling result, but because the decisive measurements were never obtained or preserved when they had the greatest evidential value. Whatever occurred on FM 1485, the missing roadside grid, vehicle survey, clothing analysis and biological dose reconstruction mean that no later theory can recover the lost baseline.
