Why Different Car Materials Respond Unevenly
The lack of widespread visible damage is not, by itself, proof that significant heating never occurred. Different automotive materials respond very differently to brief thermal exposure.
Vinyl dashboard coverings are deliberately formulated to become more flexible as temperature rises. During manufacture they are moulded with heat, and under unusually high temperatures they can soften enough to take an impression under pressure without necessarily melting. A hand pressing firmly on softened vinyl could therefore leave a local indentation while neighbouring metal components remain structurally unchanged.
Metal behaves differently. A steel door handle may become painfully hot because it conducts heat efficiently into the skin, even though its temperature remains far below the point at which visible distortion or colour change would occur. - whether previous ageing, sunlight or manufacturing characteristics made the vinyl unusually susceptible to indentation;
- whether the marks represented temporary softening or permanent chemical alteration.

The Problem of Delayed Examination
Another reason broader heat damage was not documented is that the vehicle was never subjected to the kind of forensic examination that would normally accompany an unusual physical evidence case.
The car was not immediately impounded, photographed comprehensively or examined by automotive materials specialists.
