Introduction

Colby Landrum’s recorded interview at Bergstrom Air Force Base is often treated as especially important because he was the only child witness in the Cash–Landrum incident. The recording does preserve his own words, but it does not function as an independent forensic child interview in the modern sense. By the time he was questioned on 17 August 1981, nearly eight months had passed since the reported encounter, and the family had already spoken extensively with investigators, journalists and supporters. As a result, the interview can document what Colby personally said and how he described his symptoms and memories at that stage, but it cannot establish that his recollections developed independently of adult influence or later discussion.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

Understanding that distinction is essential. The recording is valuable historical evidence because it captures an identifiable point in the evolution of the witnesses’ accounts. It is much less useful as proof that a child’s testimony independently corroborated every aspect of the adults’ narrative.

What Colby was asked during the session

The Bergstrom interview was not organised as a specialist interview with a child witness. Instead, Air Force legal personnel questioned all three witnesses within the same meeting, primarily to understand the basis of a potential claim against the United States rather than to conduct a formal investigation into child memory or witness reliability. Captain John Camp explained that the conversation was being recorded to preserve an account of who attended and what was discussed.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

Within that setting, Colby answered questions about several subjects, including:

  • what he remembered seeing during the reported incident;
  • how he reacted emotionally afterwards;
  • physical symptoms that followed;
  • his observations of the object’s appearance and the helicopters;
  • ordinary background information such as his identity and family.

Unlike a structured forensic interview used today in child protection or criminal investigations, the questioning was not designed to minimise suggestion, test alternative explanations or separate original memories from information acquired later. Colby’s answers therefore form part of a shared witness interview rather than an independently controlled evidential exercise.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

The adults present during his questioning

One of the most important features of the recording is that Colby was not interviewed alone.

The meeting included:

  • Vickie Landrum, Colby’s grandmother;[cufon.org]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2…
  • Air Force legal officers Captain John Camp and Captain Terry Davis;
  • Assistant claims officer Pat Wolf.

The transcript shows that Colby’s grandmother and Betty Cash were present while questions were asked, and the discussion frequently moved back and forth between all three witnesses. Adults sometimes answered first, expanded on points or discussed related events before questioning returned to Colby.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

That arrangement reflected the purpose of the meeting. It was intended as a recorded claims discussion rather than an exercise in preserving an uncontaminated child narrative. Modern investigative guidance generally prefers interviewing child witnesses separately so that their recollections are not unintentionally shaped by hearing other witnesses describe events before or during questioning. The Bergstrom interview was conducted before many of today’s widely adopted forensic interviewing protocols had become standard practice.

Why the testimony is not fully independent corroboration

The strongest limitation on Colby’s testimony is not that he was a child, but that his interview occurred after a substantial interval during which the incident had already become the subject of repeated discussion.

By August 1981:[blueblurrylines.com]blueblurrylines.comSource details in endnotes.

  • approximately eight months had elapsed since the reported encounter;
  • the family had been pursuing medical treatment;
  • investigators and UFO researchers had already interviewed the witnesses;
  • the incident had become a shared family narrative rather than an untouched first disclosure.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

Memory research consistently shows that recollections can change over time through repeated retrieval, discussion with others and exposure to new information. That principle does not demonstrate that Colby’s account became inaccurate, but it does mean the recording cannot prove that every element of his testimony originated solely from his own independent observation.

This point is particularly important because some later retellings have treated Colby’s status as a child witness as though it automatically insulated his testimony from influence. The transcript itself provides no basis for that conclusion.

What the interview can legitimately support

Despite these limitations, the recording remains historically valuable in several respects.

First, it confirms that Colby personally participated in the Air Force interview and answered questions directly rather than having adults speak entirely on his behalf. His responses document that he consistently described himself as having witnessed an unusual event and suffering subsequent fear and physical complaints.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

Second, the recording captures aspects of his behaviour that are difficult to reconstruct from later summaries. Readers can observe where he answers briefly, where adults elaborate, and where officials ask follow-up questions. That allows historians to evaluate the interview itself rather than relying solely on later characterisations.

Third, because the interview was tape-recorded, it avoids one common problem in historical UFO cases: dependence upon recollections written years later. Even though the testimony came months after the incident, it is still considerably closer in time than many retrospective interviews conducted decades afterwards.

What it cannot prove

The Bergstrom recording cannot establish several claims that sometimes appear in discussions of the Cash–Landrum case.

It does not demonstrate that:

  • Colby’s recollections were unaffected by months of family discussion.
  • His testimony independently verified every detail reported by Betty Cash or Vickie Landrum.
  • His account provides scientifically independent corroboration of the alleged object’s appearance or the reported helicopters.
  • The consistency between the witnesses necessarily proves objective accuracy rather than shared memory development.
  • The Air Force treated his statements as validated evidence of a military operation; the interview was conducted by legal and claims personnel with limited authority, not by an operational investigative body.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

These limitations arise from the circumstances of the interview itself rather than from any judgment about Colby’s honesty.

The balanced historical assessment

Colby’s Bergstrom testimony is best understood as a contemporaneous record of what a child witness reported after months of medical treatment, family discussion and contact with investigators. It adds important evidence to the documentary history of the Cash–Landrum incident because it preserves his own recorded responses and shows how officials questioned him.

At the same time, historians and investigators should avoid treating the recording as independent corroboration in the forensic sense. The interview was conducted in the presence of the principal adult witnesses, long after the reported event, and for legal and administrative purposes rather than under procedures designed to isolate a child’s original memory. Those features do not invalidate Colby’s testimony, but they define what conclusions it can reasonably support.
