Introduction
One of the most easily overlooked details in Vickie Landrum’s account of the Cash–Landrum incident is how little time she said she actually spent outside the vehicle. Although later retellings often leave the impression that both adult witnesses stood together watching the object, Landrum consistently described a much shorter exposure. Across the surviving witness interviews, Landrum repeatedly contrasted her behaviour with Betty Cash’s. Cash described remaining outside longer, walking towards the front of the vehicle and continuing to observe the object despite the heat. Landrum instead said she was outside only “just a few minutes” before returning to Colby. Later interviews tell the same story with only minor differences in wording. This consistency is significant because the duration of exposure becomes important when comparing the witnesses’ accounts. Cash consistently portrayed herself as the person who remained nearest the object for the longest period, while Landrum’s own testimony presents her as someone who withdrew comparatively quickly.
Heat exposure on her arm
Although Landrum described only a brief time outside, she nevertheless claimed to have experienced intense heat.
In the Bergstrom interview she explained that she burned one arm while resting it on top of the car as she restrained Colby from trying to escape. She attributed the injury not to walking close to the object but to remaining beside the vehicle while holding the frightened child and looking towards the bright light. Her description therefore differs from Cash’s. Cash associated her greater exposure with standing outside the vehicle, approaching the front of the car, and struggling with an overheated door handle when she finally returned. The distinction does not resolve whether the reported injuries had the cause the witnesses later believed, but it does show that the women described different positions and different levels of exposure rather than identical experiences.
Why Colby became her priority
Landrum’s explanation for returning inside is remarkably consistent throughout her recorded statements. She repeatedly described Colby as terrified, screaming, and attempting to get away. In one account she said she feared that if he escaped she might never catch him in the darkness. She later recalled telling Colby that if he saw “a big man” it would be Jesus coming to take them to a better place. Why later retellings blur the women’s different roles
Popular summaries of the Cash–Landrum incident frequently describe “the witnesses” collectively, giving the impression that both women stood outside together watching the object for the same length of time.
