The reported sighting by Dayton police officer Lamar Walker and his wife offers limited independent support for one important part of the Cash–Landrum story: that an unusual number of tandem-rotor helicopters may have been operating in the wider Dayton–Huffman area on the night of 29 December 1980. The Walkers reportedly described roughly a dozen Chinook-like aircraft, at least one using a bright downward-facing light. That distinction is crucial. The Walker account can reasonably be called corroboration of unusual helicopter activity, but it does not confirm that the helicopters were at the Cash–Landrum encounter site, that both groups saw the same formation, or that the aircraft were connected to an unidentified object. The available accounts leave unresolved questions about timing, geography, aircraft count and the long delay before the sighting was formally documented.
What Lamar Walker and his wife reportedly saw
Walker was described as a Dayton police patrolman who was off duty when he and his wife observed a group of helicopters in the broader area. Later summaries generally place their sighting on the same evening as the Cash–Landrum incident and describe approximately 12, or “more than a dozen”, twin-rotor helicopters travelling westwards. The tandem-rotor description is the strongest point of similarity with the principal witnesses’ account. Cash and Landrum later identified many of the aircraft they had seen as CH-47 Chinook-type helicopters, whose two large rotors create a distinctive outline. The Walkers’ smaller count does not necessarily conflict with Cash’s eventual figure of 23: observers in different positions could have seen separate portions of a larger movement, or one group could simply have miscounted aircraft at night. Published descriptions credit them with no observation of the diamond-shaped object, flames, extreme brightness or other unexplained aerial phenomenon. Their testimony therefore concerns helicopters alone. Why the timing and location remain uncertain
The Walkers were reportedly interviewed by UFO investigators in May 1982, roughly 17 months after the alleged helicopter activity. That delay does not make their account false, but it weakens precise retrospective matching. Public summaries often say the Walkers saw the helicopters “at approximately the same time” and in the “same general area”. Those phrases sound stronger than the underlying geographic information warrants. Direction of travel provides a suggestive but incomplete connection. The Walkers were said to have watched the helicopters moving westwards, while the principal witnesses described the object and aircraft receding as they continued their journey. Yet a broad compass direction over a large rural area is insufficient to prove convergence on one event. Investigators would need, at minimum, independently recorded times, exact viewing locations, bearings, duration estimates and identifiable landmarks. No published reconstruction supplies all of those elements.
The count discrepancy also deserves cautious treatment. Cash’s figure of 23 became a defining feature of the case, but that number was a visual estimate made at night under stressful conditions. The Army inquiry did not close the gap
Lieutenant Colonel George Sarran’s Army Inspector General inquiry is significant because it reportedly treated the police officer and his wife as credible witnesses. The inquiry contacted Army commands, aviation organisations, Fort Hood, an Army Reserve unit at Tomball and a Texas National Guard Chinook unit associated with Ellington. According to Sarran’s memorandum, checks of known helicopter activity in the general area produced negative results. This outcome cuts both ways. It means the Walker sighting was not dismissed merely because it came from a UFO-related investigation. A government investigator apparently regarded the couple as sincere. But credibility is not identification: honest witnesses can misjudge aircraft type, number, date or distance. Nor does the absence of a matching Army record automatically prove a concealed operation. It could reflect incorrect witness details, activity controlled by another organisation, incomplete record searches or ordinary documentary loss. Conversely, the negative search does not prove that no helicopters were present. It shows only that investigators did not find records connecting the reported formation to the Army components they checked.
Corroboration versus confirmation
The Walker account is most useful when treated as a narrowly defined evidential point. It supports the proposition that people other than Cash, Landrum and Colby later reported conspicuous tandem-rotor helicopter activity in the region. It does not independently establish several larger claims often attached to it:
- that the helicopters were CH-47s rather than merely twin-rotor silhouettes;
- that they appeared between 9 and 9.30 pm;
- that they passed directly over the encounter location;
- that they were the same aircraft counted by Cash and Landrum;
- that they were escorting or pursuing an unidentified object;
- or that they belonged to a covert United States military operation.
The downward-facing light is likewise ambiguous. Searchlights and landing lights are ordinary helicopter equipment. In the Cash–Landrum context, such a light may appear consistent with aircraft searching for something on the ground or tracking another object, but it is not inherently anomalous and does not reveal the operator’s purpose.
The fairest assessment is therefore that Walker’s report modestly strengthens the helicopter component of the case while doing little to resolve its central causal question. It makes a large helicopter presence somewhat harder to dismiss as a detail invented solely by the three principal witnesses. At the same time, the delayed interview, uncertain observation coordinates, incomplete timing information and absence of an object sighting prevent it from becoming decisive confirmation.
What would have turned the sighting into stronger evidence?
A contemporaneous police log, personal diary entry, dispatch record or dated report would have anchored the Walkers’ memory before extensive publicity surrounded the case. Exact locations and bearings could then have been compared with the route attributed to Cash and Landrum. Flight records, radar data, fuel or maintenance paperwork, crew testimony, or reports from several independently documented observers could have shown whether one formation crossed the relevant area at the relevant time.
None of that supporting material has publicly emerged. Lamar Walker’s sighting therefore occupies an important but limited place in the Cash–Landrum evidence. It is not merely irrelevant hearsay, because it reportedly came from a named local police officer, was considered during the wider investigation and shared a distinctive tandem-rotor detail with the main account. But it remains a parallel observation with an unresolved connection—not proof that the helicopters, the witnesses and the reported object were all part of the same event.
