What Happened to Vickie Landrum's Eyes?
Vickie described months of watering, swelling and gritty eye pain, but the surviving record lacks the original specialist notes needed to verify cause.

Introduction
Vickie Landrum’s eye problems are among the most frequently cited medical claims associated with the Cash–Landrum incident, yet they are also among the least well documented. Unlike Betty Cash’s hospitalisation, which generated a larger surviving medical record, Vickie largely described her eye symptoms through interviews and legal filings rather than publicly available specialist records. According to her account, her eyes watered continuously for months, became swollen and painfully irritated, and later showed changes that an eye doctor reportedly compared with cataracts. The available evidence confirms that Vickie consistently reported these symptoms, but it does not independently establish either their medical cause or the exact diagnosis.[Cufon]cufon.orgTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…
Eye symptoms reported after the encounter
Vickie Landrum consistently maintained that her eyes became one of the most persistent sources of discomfort after the reported encounter. Her descriptions included:
- continuous watering for approximately three months;
- marked swelling that made it difficult to see;
- burning and irritation;
- prolonged sensitivity rather than a short-lived episode.
These complaints fit within the broader pattern of symptoms reported by all three witnesses, who also described nausea, diarrhoea and skin problems. However, Vickie’s eye complaints were distinctive because she claimed they continued long after many of her other symptoms had begun to improve.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2…
Unlike temporary redness that might accompany irritation from bright light, Vickie portrayed the condition as a chronic problem that affected her vision and prompted examination by an eye specialist. That distinction has contributed to continuing discussion of her case among both UFO researchers and sceptical investigators.
What the Air Force interview actually records
The strongest surviving primary source is the taped interview conducted at Bergstrom Air Force Base in August 1981, roughly eight months after the incident. During that interview, Vickie personally described what she said her eye doctor had told her.
She explained that her eyes had “teared for about three months” and had swollen so badly that she could hardly see. She then stated that her doctor believed a film had begun forming over her eyes and warned that surgery might eventually become necessary. According to Vickie’s recollection, the doctor reportedly distinguished between ordinary cataracts—which might be removable with useful vision remaining—and what she understood to be cataracts associated with severe eye injury, which she feared could leave her blind.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2…
Importantly, the interview records Vickie’s own description of what she believed her ophthalmologist had said. It is not itself a medical report, nor does it include the doctor’s diagnosis or clinical findings.
Why the claimed diagnosis remains uncertain
Many later retellings simply state that Vickie “developed cataracts” because of the encounter. The surviving evidence is considerably less definitive.
Several limitations affect the claim:
- no original ophthalmology records confirming the diagnosis have been widely published;
- no detailed examination notes describing the appearance of the alleged eye changes are available in the public record;
- the Air Force interview contains only Vickie’s recollection of conversations with her eye doctor rather than independent medical documentation.
Later summaries often refer to a cataract developing in one eye during 1981, but these references generally trace back to secondary accounts rather than newly available clinical records.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCash–Landrum incidentCash–Landrum incident
Because of these gaps, historians and medical commentators distinguish between two separate propositions:
- That Vickie experienced prolonged eye irritation. This is consistently supported by her own testimony and repeated statements.
- That the irritation caused a specific eye disease such as cataracts. This remains much less certain because the underlying specialist documentation has not been publicly verified.
What later reviews have said
The eye complaints have received differing interpretations.
Supportive writers generally regard Vickie’s prolonged watering, swelling and later visual problems as consistent with exposure to an unusually intense environmental source, sometimes suggesting radiation or another form of energetic exposure. These discussions usually rely on Vickie’s testimony and later UFO literature rather than newly released ophthalmic records.[AnomalyDesk]anomalydesk.comcash landrum incidentThe Cash-Landrum Incident (December 1980) | AnomalyDesk Case File 088May 21, 2026…
Sceptical analyses have reached a more cautious conclusion. Some reviewers have argued that the only clearly documented long-term ocular finding was the reported appearance of a cataract and have noted that cataracts are common in older adults and may have existed independently of the reported encounter. Correspondence cited by sceptical researchers also notes that one consulting physician considered the cataract likely to have been pre-existing rather than necessarily caused by the incident.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: Skeptoid Challenges the Cash-Landrum UFO IncidentDecember 7, 2018…
Neither position is supported by a complete publicly available ophthalmology file, leaving the question unresolved.
What can reasonably be concluded
The historical record supports several cautious conclusions.
Vickie Landrum consistently reported months of excessive tearing, swollen eyes and persistent irritation after the alleged encounter. Those complaints appear repeatedly in witness interviews, legal filings and later accounts, making them one of the more consistent aspects of her personal testimony.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2…
By contrast, the medical explanation for those symptoms remains uncertain. Publicly available evidence does not include the original specialist records needed to confirm exactly what her eye doctor observed, whether cataracts were definitively diagnosed, or whether any diagnosed condition could be linked medically to the reported encounter. As a result, Vickie’s lasting eye irritation is well documented as a reported symptom, while the underlying diagnosis and cause remain matters of unresolved historical and medical debate.[cufon.org]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2…
