Within Radiation Claim
Could a Car Explain the Unequal Illnesses?
The witnesses' different positions raise a basic physics question because a car would block some emissions far better than penetrating gamma radiation.

Introduction
One of the most frequently overlooked questions in the Cash–Landrum incident is whether the witnesses’ different positions relative to their car are compatible with the claim that ionising radiation caused their illnesses. Betty Cash reportedly spent the longest time outside the vehicle, while Vickie Landrum and her young grandson Colby remained mostly inside. The difference in reported illness appears, at first glance, to support an exposure–response relationship. However, the physics of radiation shielding complicates that interpretation. Whether a standard passenger car could have protected the Landrums depends entirely on the type of radiation involved, and the known behaviour of common forms of ionising radiation does not provide an easy fit with the reported pattern of injuries.
Who Was Outside and Who Remained Inside?
According to the witnesses’ accounts, the diamond-shaped object emitted intense heat that caused Betty Cash to stop the vehicle. Cash left the car and approached the object briefly before retreating because of the heat. Vickie Landrum also exited for at least part of the encounter but reportedly stayed much closer to the vehicle, while Colby Landrum spent most of the incident inside the car. After the object departed, all three continued their journey, but Betty Cash later developed substantially more severe symptoms than the other two.[Nicap]nicap.orgUFO ReportUFO ReportDecember 29, 1980…
This difference has often been presented as evidence that longer exposure produced greater injury. From a purely observational standpoint, that is a reasonable hypothesis. The more difficult question is whether the car itself could plausibly account for the difference if ionising radiation was responsible.
How Common Radiation Types Interact with Vehicles
The answer depends on which type of radiation is assumed.
Alpha particles are stopped by paper, clothing and even the outer layer of human skin. They also travel only very short distances through air. If the source was more than a few centimetres away, alpha radiation could not have reached any of the witnesses.
Beta particles travel farther but are still rapidly absorbed by air and by relatively thin materials. At distances of tens of metres—roughly those described in the Cash–Landrum encounter—ordinary beta radiation would already be heavily attenuated before reaching the car. Vehicle windows and body panels would provide additional shielding.
Gamma rays are different. They are highly penetrating electromagnetic radiation capable of travelling long distances through air. Ordinary automobile glass, sheet steel and upholstery reduce gamma exposure only modestly. Effective protection against intense gamma radiation typically requires much denser shielding, such as thick concrete, lead or substantial amounts of earth. Measurements of vehicle shielding in radiation-protection research consistently show that cars provide only limited reductions in external gamma exposure rather than complete protection.[PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govShielding factors for vehicles to gamma radiation from activity deposited on structures and ground surfaces - PubMed…
Neutrons present a similar challenge. They are also highly penetrating and require specialised shielding materials rich in hydrogen, such as water or polyethylene, rather than ordinary vehicle construction.
The consequence is straightforward: if the exposure was dominated by gamma rays or neutrons intense enough to produce severe acute illness in Betty Cash, a normal passenger car would not be expected to protect nearby occupants dramatically.
Why the Shielding Problem Matters
This creates what investigators sometimes call the “car shielding problem”.
The reported medical pattern suggests a substantial difference between Betty Cash and the two Landrums. Yet the physical properties of penetrating ionising radiation predict that:
- Betty Cash would receive the greatest dose because she spent more time outside.
- Vickie Landrum, standing near the car or briefly outside, should receive a somewhat smaller dose.
- Colby Landrum, remaining inside, might receive a modest reduction if the vehicle intercepted part of the radiation field.
The crucial issue is one of degree rather than direction. A car can reduce some exposures, but not enough to transform a potentially life-threatening whole-body gamma dose into a comparatively mild exposure over only a few metres of separation. Radiation physicists have therefore argued that the reported difference in illness is larger than the expected shielding effect of an ordinary automobile if penetrating ionising radiation were the cause.[PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govShielding factors for vehicles to gamma radiation from activity deposited on structures and ground surfaces - PubMed…
Which Exposure Patterns Better Match the Reported Injuries?
The reported distribution of symptoms fits some possible mechanisms better than others.
A primarily thermal exposure is consistent with Betty Cash being injured most severely because she reportedly remained outside longer and was closest to the intense heat. Burns from infrared radiation or hot gases would naturally decrease with distance and with physical barriers.
Localised ultraviolet exposure could also produce eye irritation and skin reddening without necessarily causing uniform whole-body radiation sickness.
By contrast, a large external gamma-ray field capable of producing acute radiation syndrome would generally expose everyone nearby, including those inside the vehicle. Although dose differences would exist because of time and distance, the car itself would not be expected to create a sharp division between severe illness outside and comparatively milder illness inside.
Some investigators and consultants who reviewed the case therefore suggested that, if an unusual energy source was involved, it might have included strong thermal or non-ionising components rather than pure penetrating ionising radiation. Others have proposed entirely different explanations, including chemical or environmental agents capable of producing symptoms resembling radiation injury, although no specific agent has been demonstrated.[Nicap]nicap.orgcashlandrum…
What the Car Shielding Question Can—and Cannot—Resolve
The shielding issue neither proves nor disproves the Cash–Landrum witnesses’ account. Instead, it functions as a test of internal consistency between the reported exposure geometry and the proposed mechanism.
Several points remain well supported:
- Betty Cash reportedly experienced the most severe illness after spending the greatest amount of time outside the vehicle.[Nicap]nicap.orgUFO ReportUFO ReportDecember 29, 1980…
- Passenger vehicles provide only limited protection against penetrating gamma radiation, not the extensive shielding associated with purpose-built radiation shelters.[PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govShielding factors for vehicles to gamma radiation from activity deposited on structures and ground surfaces - PubMed…
- The witnesses’ differing positions therefore create a genuine challenge for explanations based on intense whole-body gamma irradiation alone.
The result is not that radiation can be ruled out, but that any radiation-based explanation must account for why an ordinary car appears to have corresponded with markedly different reported outcomes. That remains one of the central unresolved physical questions within the broader debate over whether the Cash–Landrum illnesses represented genuine radiation injury or were caused by some other mechanism.
