Introduction

The Bergstrom Air Force Base interview of Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Colby Landrum is one of the most valuable records in the Cash–Landrum case because it captures the witnesses speaking at length only eight months after the reported encounter. Recorded on 17 August 1981 in the base law library, the meeting was conducted by Air Force legal and claims personnel, not by a specialist UFO investigation team. Its purpose was chiefly to hear the witnesses’ account, clarify their allegations and consider where, if anywhere, the matter could be referred.[Whipnet]whipnet.comUFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFOAliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1UFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1 Documents Photos R…

Illustrative overview

The interview preserves details that later summaries often present too confidently. Cash gave a time range rather than an exact time; the witnesses struggled to place the site on the map provided; estimates of the helicopters were approximate; and Landrum explicitly resisted the suggestion that she had identified them as Air Force aircraft. The recording therefore strengthens the historical record of what the witnesses reported while also documenting the limits of their observations.

Why the witnesses were interviewed

The meeting began at 10.40 am in the law library of Building 2102 at Bergstrom Air Force Base near Austin. Present for the Air Force were Captain John Camp, the acting staff judge advocate; Captain Terry Davis, the base claims officer; and Pat Wolf, an assistant claims officer. Camp asked permission to record the meeting so that there would be a clear account of who attended, what was discussed and why the witnesses had come.[Whipnet]whipnet.comUFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFOAliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1UFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1 Documents Photos R…

That setting matters. The witnesses were not appearing before an operational intelligence unit equipped to reconstruct aircraft movements, inspect radar data or conduct a scientific examination of the alleged exposure. They had approached government offices because they believed a government-associated object or military aircraft had injured them and because they were facing medical costs. Cash said she had been directed towards the judge advocate and claims office after writing letters seeking assistance.[Cufon]cufon.orgBC: He said the Judge Advocate at the Claims Office at Bergstrom Air Force Base, I've got… wrote down, mother, I was at her house when…

The questioning accordingly moved between three subjects:

  • what the witnesses remembered seeing;
  • their subsequent illnesses and expenses;
  • whether there was any basis for a claim against the United States.

Cash estimated that her medical expenditure had reached about $10,000 by the time of the interview, while Landrum placed expenditure on treatment for her and Colby’s eyes at roughly $600–$700. These were witness estimates rather than audited totals, but they show why the meeting was framed partly as a claims matter rather than simply as a UFO report.[Ufology News]ufology-news.comUfology News Transcript, Cash-Landrum InterviewUfology NewsTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 9, 2002 — Transcript, Cash-Landrum Interview TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF…Published: June 9, 2002

Camp also made clear that Bergstrom had limited authority. Project Blue Book, the Air Force’s former UFO-investigation programme, had closed years earlier, and Camp told the witnesses that he could hear their account and forward a brief report but could not promise an investigation or compensation. The recording therefore documents institutional uncertainty from the outset: Air Force personnel accepted the meeting, but did not treat the interview itself as confirmation that an Air Force operation had occurred.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgIt has been claimed that the craft was a US attempt at making a UFO since it was spewing out flames at the bottom and was joined by many…

What the interview actually fixed in the record

Cash placed the incident on Farm-to-Market Road 1485 between New Caney and Huffman on 29 December 1980, at approximately 9.00–9.30 pm. This is an important early formulation because later retellings sometimes convert the interval into a precise time. The interview supports only a half-hour estimate.[Whipnet]whipnet.comUFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFOAliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1UFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1 Documents Photos R…

Even the location could not be fixed precisely during the meeting. The officials placed a Texas map before the witnesses, but Cash was unable to identify the exact site because the map lacked sufficient local detail. After a break in the tape, the group established only the broader geographical relationship between New Caney, Huffman and the area north-east of Houston. This does not show that the witnesses did not know the road; it shows that the interview did not produce a precise, contemporaneously marked incident point from the map available in the room.[Whipnet]whipnet.comUFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFOAliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1UFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1 Documents Photos R…

Cash described the object as hanging over the road and above or among tall pine trees. When asked for a familiar size comparison, she said it might have been as large as, or larger than, a municipal water tower. She and Landrum agreed with a drawn diamond-like outline, while adding that fire or flame emerged from below. Such comparisons are useful records of perception, but they are not measurements: the transcript contains no verified distance, angular size or surveyed reference from which the object’s dimensions can be calculated reliably.[UFO Casebook]ufocasebook.comUFO CasebookCash/Landrum Interview, Part 1Cash/Landrum Interview, Part 1 TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB, INTERVIEW OF BETTY CASH, VICKIE & C…

The questioning also exposed the difference between remembered experience and technical observation. Asked whether more than one flame was visible at a time, Cash replied that she had not been studying the flames because she was trying to find a way out. When an interviewer asked whether the object might have had one engine or several, she could not say and referred to questions that had previously been put to her under hypnosis. The exchange is a useful caution against treating later engine or propulsion theories as direct witness evidence.[Ufology News]ufology-news.comUfology News Transcript, Cash-Landrum InterviewUfology NewsTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 9, 2002 — Transcript, Cash-Landrum Interview TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF…Published: June 9, 2002

The helicopter identification was less definite than later accounts suggest

The helicopters were the most consequential part of the witnesses’ story because their presence appeared to connect the unexplained object with an organised military response. Cash said she counted about 23 aircraft and described twin-rotor helicopters surrounding or following the object. The interviewers used photographs or silhouettes to explore what type she meant, leading towards an identification resembling the tandem-rotor CH-47 Chinook.[UFO Casebook]ufocasebook.comUFO CasebookCash/Landrum Interview, Part 1Cash/Landrum Interview, Part 1 TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB, INTERVIEW OF BETTY CASH, VICKIE & C…

Yet the transcript does not support an equally firm conclusion about ownership. When Camp summarised the account as involving helicopters that the witnesses believed belonged to the United States Air Force, Landrum interrupted him: she did not say they were Air Force aircraft and had seen no service name or identifying sign. Her confidence concerned their twin-rotor shape, not their branch of service.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF … His father's nameBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF … His father's name

Cash’s account of markings was more affirmative but remained difficult to pin down. During questioning she referred to printed lettering rather than handwritten markings, and the interviewers sought clarification and initials on a description. The surviving transcript, however, contains interruptions, unclear passages and discussion around photographs, leaving ambiguity over exactly what letters Cash believed she had seen, on how many helicopters and under what lighting conditions.[UFO Casebook]ufocasebook.comUFO CasebookCash/Landrum Interview, Part 1Cash/Landrum Interview, Part 1 TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB, INTERVIEW OF BETTY CASH, VICKIE & C…

The number 23 should likewise be read as an estimate. The witnesses described helicopters arriving from several directions while they were frightened, moving and attending to a distressed child. Later commentary on other early recordings notes that Landrum acknowledged that her count might have been inaccurate. The Bergstrom exchange establishes that a large formation was alleged; it does not establish an independently verified total.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comOpen source on blueblurrylines.com.

This distinction later became central. An Army Inspector General inquiry examined whether Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard helicopters had operated in the relevant area. Its summary stated that checks of flight records produced negative results and emphasised that the inquiry was limited to possible military helicopter involvement; it did not attempt to prove the UFO event or assess the witnesses’ medical claims.[Ufologie]patrickgross.orgUfologieufoUfologieufo

Colby’s testimony was recorded, but not independently developed

Colby Landrum was interviewed during the same session about what he saw and about his health. His inclusion is significant because it preserves the child witness’s voice rather than relying entirely on adult summaries. The questioning, however, occurred with his grandmother and Cash present, after the event had already been discussed repeatedly within the family and with investigators.

The transcript records Colby answering simple questions about physical symptoms, including skin eruptions and continuing stomach discomfort. It does not amount to a structured forensic interview designed to test whether his visual memories were independent of the adults’ accounts.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgIt has been claimed that the craft was a US attempt at making a UFO since it was spewing out flames at the bottom and was joined by many…

This limits how the recording should be used. Colby’s participation corroborates that he was presented to Air Force personnel as a witness and that he reported distress. It cannot by itself demonstrate that each descriptive detail attributed to him originated independently, nor does it resolve whether later similarities among the three narratives reflect shared observation, repeated discussion or both.

The transcript is a source, not an official finding

The text commonly circulated online was transcribed years later from a copy of the recording reportedly supplied by Betty Cash to UFO researchers. The transcriber expressly warned that some words and names were uncertain, that comments about pauses or vocal emphasis were interpretative, and that no greater claim of accuracy should be inferred.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgIt has been claimed that the craft was a US attempt at making a UFO since it was spewing out flames at the bottom and was joined by many…

That provenance creates two important limitations. First, the published text is not the same thing as a contemporaneous, certified Air Force transcript. Secondly, the available recording apparently begins after the participants had started entering or settling into the room, so it may not preserve every preliminary remark. The surviving version is still valuable, but exact wording should be treated with care where the transcript marks speech as unintelligible or records several people speaking at once.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgIt has been claimed that the craft was a US attempt at making a UFO since it was spewing out flames at the bottom and was joined by many…

The interview also contains no scientific verification of the witnesses’ physical claims. The officials did not measure the car, reconstruct the heat exposure, analyse environmental samples or establish a radiation dose. Statements about blisters, eye problems, hair loss, hospital treatment and brown vegetation were received as testimony and supporting allegations, not validated during the meeting.[Ufology News]ufology-news.comUfology News Transcript, Cash-Landrum InterviewUfology NewsTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 9, 2002 — Transcript, Cash-Landrum Interview TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF…Published: June 9, 2002

For the same reason, the officials’ questions should not be mistaken for endorsement. Phrases such as “so it burned the trees up” sometimes appear in retellings as though they were findings, but in context they were conversational prompts followed by Cash’s more cautious response that the trees looked very brown. The recording frequently shows interviewers testing or paraphrasing a claim, and witnesses then qualifying it.[UFO Casebook]ufocasebook.comUFO CasebookCash/Landrum Interview, Part 1Cash/Landrum Interview, Part 1 TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB, INTERVIEW OF BETTY CASH, VICKIE & C…

How the recording shaped later versions

The Bergstrom interview helped stabilise the features that became standard in later narratives: a diamond-shaped object, flame beneath it, intense heat, an estimated 23 helicopters, reported medical effects and the belief that the object was probably human-made. Because these elements appeared in a recorded government meeting, later writers could cite them as early documented testimony rather than folklore added many years afterwards.

At the same time, repeated summaries tended to strip away the interview’s hesitations. “About 23” became “23”; helicopters resembling twin-rotor military types became specifically identified Chinooks; uncertain or disputed lettering became clear United States markings; and a meeting with base legal officers was sometimes described as though the Air Force had conducted a formal UFO investigation.

The witnesses’ own discussion of possible explanations was also more complicated than a simple extraterrestrial claim. Landrum said she believed the object had to be man-made and rejected the idea of “little green men”. Cash similarly said she had not previously believed in life from other planets. Their suspicion of government responsibility arose primarily from the helicopters and their injuries, not from a claim that they had recognised a known secret aircraft.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF … His father's nameBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2TRANSCRIPT OF BERGSTROM AFB INTERVIEW OF … His father's name

One particularly instructive episode concerned a National Guard helicopter crewman whom Landrum believed had mentioned being called out for a UFO incident. Later examination of a separate recording indicates that the pilot was referring to an earlier event, apparently in 1977, rather than confirming deployment on the night of 29 December 1980. This shows how an ambiguous conversation could become attached to the central allegation as the story developed.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comOpen source on blueblurrylines.com.

What can safely be concluded

The Bergstrom recording demonstrates that Cash, Landrum and Colby personally presented a detailed account to Air Force legal personnel on 17 August 1981. It fixes an early version of their reported time, route, object description, helicopter estimate, illnesses and financial concerns. It also records their frustration at being unable to identify a government body that would investigate or accept responsibility.[Whipnet]whipnet.comUFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFOAliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1UFO.Whipnet.org | Aliens | UFO | The Piney Woods UFO - Transcript 1 Documents Photos R…

It does not demonstrate that an unidentified craft was military property, that 23 helicopters were present, that any aircraft carried Air Force markings, or that radiation caused the reported illnesses. On those central questions, the interview preserves allegations rather than resolving them.

Its greatest evidential value lies precisely in that distinction. The recording is stronger than a late anecdotal retelling because it captures the witnesses directly and allows their wording to be examined. It is weaker than physical, operational or scientific evidence because it contains no corroborating flight records, radar data, photographs of the encounter, verified markings or measured exposure. Read carefully, the Bergstrom interview neither dismisses the witnesses nor proves their interpretation. It preserves what they said while revealing how much remained uncertain even at an early stage of the case.
