Introduction
John F. Schuessler’s first case file on the Cash–Landrum incident is one of the most important surviving primary records associated with the case because it captures the witnesses’ accounts before years of publicity, legal proceedings and repeated retelling influenced the narrative. The file does not prove what the witnesses encountered. Instead, its significance lies in documenting what was actually recorded at the beginning of the investigation. How the March 1981 file was assembled
Schuessler became involved after receiving a telephone call from a reporter at the Conroe Courier on 20 February 1981 regarding an unusual story developing near Dayton, Texas. The following day he conducted his first telephone interview with Betty Cash. Within another week he and fellow investigator Alan Holt interviewed Vickie Landrum and her grandson Colby on location and visited the section of Farm-to-Market Road 1485 where the incident was said to have occurred. Interviews, sketches and site observations
Witness interviews before the story matured
One of the file’s greatest historical strengths is that it preserves interviews conducted only weeks after the reported event. The principal elements already appear in recognisable form:
- a brilliantly luminous diamond- or spindle-shaped object;
- intense heat felt inside the vehicle;
- flames or exhaust beneath the object;

The file contains witness-produced drawings and MUFON forms recording the reported appearance of the object and its position relative to the road and vehicle. These sketches were created as investigative aids rather than artistic reconstructions.
Because they predate later books and television recreations, they provide an independent record of how the witnesses initially described the object’s general shape and orientation. Observations at the alleged location
Schuessler and Holt also inspected the reported site during the first phase of the investigation. Their notes describe the roadway, surrounding terrain and witness explanations of where the vehicle stopped and how the reported object was positioned.
Importantly, the preliminary file records observations rather than confirmed physical evidence.
