One of the lesser-known pieces of testimony connected with the Cash–Landrum incident comes not from the three principal witnesses, but from a Dayton-area police officer and his wife. Interviewed well after the event, they reported seeing numerous Chinook-type helicopters and an unusually powerful light directed downward from one or more of the aircraft. Unlike Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum, however, they did not describe a glowing diamond-shaped object. This testimony has become important because it offers a possible conventional explanation for at least one aspect of the original sighting: an intense overhead light that might have appeared to be a separate airborne object under night-time conditions. In 1982, UFO investigators interviewed Dayton police officer Lamar Walker and his wife, Marie Walker, about what they recalled seeing on the night of 29 December 1980. According to the published summaries of those interviews, the couple reported observing roughly a dozen Chinook-type helicopters operating in the general area. Significantly, they did not report seeing the dramatic diamond-shaped craft described by Cash and the Landrums. How a downward searchlight could mimic a separate object
The “searchlight theory” does not attempt to explain every feature of the Cash–Landrum encounter. Instead, it proposes a narrower possibility: that an exceptionally bright downward-facing light on a helicopter could have created the impression of an independent glowing object under difficult viewing conditions.
Several characteristics of night observation make this plausible in principle.
A powerful landing or searchlight can overwhelm surrounding visual detail, preventing observers from seeing the aircraft carrying it. When viewed through trees, mist, or from changing angles along a winding road, the illuminated beam may appear detached from its source. If the helicopter is moving directly towards or away from an observer rather than across the field of view, the light can also appear to hover with very little apparent sideways motion.
The presence of multiple helicopters could increase the confusion. Overlapping beams, changing headings and varying altitudes might create shifting patterns of light that are difficult to interpret without clear visual references. An observer might perceive one especially bright light while failing to distinguish the aircraft responsible for it.
These are recognised limitations of human night-time perception and do not require unusual atmospheric effects. Why the searchlight explanation remains incomplete
Although the Walker testimony provides a conventional mechanism for the reported brightness, it leaves major parts of the case unresolved.
The primary witnesses consistently described an object that appeared to:
- hover at very low altitude above the road;
- emit flames or fiery exhaust downward;
- generate intense radiant heat;
- later depart while accompanied by numerous helicopters.
A helicopter searchlight can plausibly account for extreme brightness, but it cannot by itself account for the reported thermal effects or the witnesses’ description of a large hovering diamond. Supporters of the UFO interpretation therefore argue that the helicopter evidence complements rather than replaces the unidentified object.
Conversely, sceptical analysts note that if independent witnesses in the same area saw helicopters and brilliant lights but did not report an exotic craft, that difference suggests at least some observers were witnessing ordinary aviation activity. Why the delayed testimony remains uncertain
The strongest limitation of the Dayton witness account is timing.
Walker and his wife were interviewed around 1982, roughly eighteen months after the incident. By then the Cash–Landrum case had received widespread attention within UFO research circles and in regional media. As with any retrospective witness statement, investigators must consider the possibility that later discussion influenced memory, consciously or unconsciously.
There are additional uncertainties:
- No contemporary police report documenting the helicopter sighting from the night itself has been identified.
- Published accounts are based primarily on later investigator interviews rather than immediate written statements.
- Different retellings vary in the reported number of helicopters and in the exact circumstances of the observation.

These factors do not prove the testimony inaccurate. They simply reduce its evidential weight compared with observations recorded immediately after an event.
What the Dayton witnesses contribute to the wider debate
Within the narrower question of conventional aircraft explanations, the Dayton testimony occupies an important middle ground.
It is among the few reports that independently support unusual helicopter activity in the area while declining to corroborate the central claim of a hovering diamond-shaped craft. That combination makes it valuable to both sides of the debate for different reasons.
For proponents of conventional explanations, the reported downward searchlight demonstrates how at least some of the extraordinary illumination could have originated from identifiable aircraft operating at night.
For proponents of an anomalous event, the helicopter sightings provide independent support that significant aviation activity occurred in the vicinity, even if the Walkers themselves did not observe the same object reported by Cash and the Landrums.
Taken on its own, the Walker testimony neither confirms nor disproves the central Cash–Landrum narrative.
