The physical condition of Betty Cash’s 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass could have provided one of the few tangible lines of evidence in the Cash–Landrum incident. Instead, the vehicle gradually lost much of its forensic value because it remained an everyday car rather than being preserved as evidence. After the initial claims of heat damage, Cash continued using it for routine transport while investigators, researchers and later lawyers debated what the reported damage meant. Why the original condition mattered so much
A forensic investigation depends on comparing an object’s condition immediately after an event with its prior and later condition. In the Cash–Landrum case, investigators instead encountered a vehicle that had already spent weeks back in normal service before its first documented inspection.

- the exact appearance of the dashboard before any further use;
- the condition of paint, plastic trim and weather seals immediately after the reported encounter;
- the state of electrical systems before additional faults or maintenance occurred;

John Schuessler’s first examination noted that the exterior generally appeared to be in good condition, with the dashboard impressions standing out as the principal visible anomaly. How everyday use steadily altered the vehicle
Continuing to drive the Cutlass introduced a stream of ordinary ageing processes that made later observations increasingly difficult to interpret.
Wear affecting vinyl, paint and plastics
Automotive interiors naturally change with age. Early-1980s padded dashboards were especially vulnerable to:
- prolonged ultraviolet exposure through the windscreen;
- repeated heating and cooling cycles;
- oxidation of vinyl surfaces;
- shrinking and hardening of foam beneath the covering;
- pressure from passengers leaning or resting hands on the dashboard.
Each of these mechanisms can change texture, stiffness and appearance over time. Even if the dashboard impressions genuinely originated during the reported encounter, years of environmental ageing would make it progressively harder to determine whether their size, depth or shape reflected the original event or subsequent material changes.
The same applies to exterior plastics, paint, rubber seals and lighting components. Mechanical changes accumulated naturally

Without maintenance records tied to immediate post-incident inspections, investigators could not reliably separate:
- ordinary engine wear;
- ignition or fuel-system problems;
- warranty repairs;
- age-related electrical faults;
- alleged effects from the reported encounter.
Once routine servicing began, replacement parts themselves removed pieces that might otherwise have been examined. Why later faults could no longer be dated
One of the greatest consequences of continued use was chronological uncertainty.
Forensic investigators normally ask a simple question: when did this change occur?
As the Cutlass remained in service, that question became increasingly difficult to answer.
For example:
- A cracked plastic component found years later might have originated from sunlight rather than unusual heat.
- Windshield damage observed much later could not easily be linked to the original event.
- Crumbling steering-wheel material could reflect ageing polymers rather than exceptional temperatures.
- New dashboard deformation could result from continued pressure on softened or ageing padding.
Even genuine abnormalities lose evidential strength when there is no documented chain showing they appeared immediately after the claimed incident and remained unchanged thereafter.
Researchers have also noted that stories surrounding the car accumulated additional claims over time, including later reports involving the steering wheel and windscreen. The trade-off between transport and preservation
From a practical perspective, Betty Cash faced a straightforward problem. The Cutlass was not merely an exhibit; it was her personal transportation.
Keeping the vehicle off the road would have imposed significant financial and practical burdens while no government agency secured it as evidence. At the same time, the legal claims arising from the incident moved slowly, and no authority placed the vehicle into controlled storage.
That created an unavoidable trade-off:

By the late 1980s and 1990s, any examination had to contend with:
- years of vibration from normal driving;
- repeated cleaning of interior and exterior surfaces;
- environmental exposure;
- routine maintenance and possible replacement of components;
- uncertain documentation of exactly what had changed and when.
Curt Collins notes that Cash continued driving the car for many years and that later researchers eventually located it in Mississippi during the 1990s, but funding was unavailable for further investigation. Baseline loss rather than proof or disproof
The continued use of Betty Cash’s Cutlass neither confirms nor disproves the witnesses’ account. Instead, it illustrates a classic evidence-preservation problem.
Had the vehicle been photographed extensively, sampled, sealed and stored shortly after the reported encounter, investigators could have compared later claims against a documented baseline. Because that baseline was never established and the car remained an everyday vehicle, subsequent deterioration made it increasingly impossible to determine which features reflected an extraordinary event and which resulted from entirely ordinary ageing.
