The recorded interview at Bergstrom Air Force Base on 17 August 1981 was not organised as a formal UFO investigation. Instead, it was handled primarily as a potential government liability and compensation matter because Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Colby Landrum were seeking help with injuries and medical expenses they believed resulted from the December 1980 Cash–Landrum incident. By the time they reached Bergstrom, nearly eight months had passed, and the witnesses had already contacted elected officials in an effort to obtain assistance. The route to Bergstrom was driven by the witnesses’ search for compensation rather than by any established military reporting process for unusual aerial phenomena.
During the interview, Captain John Camp asked Betty Cash how she had come to the base. Cash explained that she had written to U.S. Senators Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower after receiving no satisfactory explanation for her illnesses. Why the interview combined factual reconstruction with legal questions
Although the meeting centred on a possible claim, the officers still needed a detailed account of the alleged encounter.
For a government claim to succeed, officials first had to understand what the witnesses alleged had happened, when it occurred, where it occurred and why they believed the United States government might be responsible. Consequently, the interview alternated between:
- reconstructing the reported event;
- identifying the alleged military helicopters;
- documenting the sequence of illnesses;

- determining whether any evidence linked the injuries to federal activity.
