Did the Car Body Burn Vickie Landrum?
Landrum linked marks on her arms to leaning against the car, but her account could not establish the vehicle metal's actual temperature.

Introduction
One of the more specific heat-related claims in the Cash–Landrum incident concerns Vickie Landrum’s assertion that she burned her arm while leaning across the top of her car door to comfort her young grandson, Colby. Unlike broader claims that the area felt intensely hot, this account involves a direct point of contact between her skin and the vehicle’s bodywork. That makes it potentially important because contact burns can, in some circumstances, provide evidence that an object itself became hot rather than merely being surrounded by hot air or intense radiation.
At the same time, the claim has important evidential limits. Landrum’s description establishes what she believed happened, but it does not establish the actual temperature of the car’s metal. No contemporaneous measurements were taken, the vehicle was not subjected to thermal testing immediately afterwards, and the reported injury cannot now be used to reconstruct how hot the bodywork actually became. The arm-contact claim therefore remains a significant part of the witnesses’ testimony without becoming independent proof that the car absorbed extraordinary levels of heat.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
How Landrum Described Leaning on the Car
The clearest account comes from the August 1981 interview conducted at Bergstrom Air Force Base. Landrum explained that while Betty Cash was outside the vehicle, she remained beside the car trying to calm Colby, who was terrified by the object overhead. She described holding him inside the doorway while resting an arm across the upper edge of the car. During that process she said she “burned my arm on top of the car,” later adding that one arm had remained more seriously affected than the other. She also said she believed she had looked towards the object for too long while attempting to distract Colby.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Later in the same interview, Landrum pointed to visible scars on her arms and described recurring blisters and small knots that appeared after the initial healing. She recalled physicians asking whether she had encountered poison ivy or poison oak because of the appearance of the lesions. Her explanation consistently linked the location of those marks to where her arms had rested against the vehicle during the roadside encounter.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Although versions of the Cash–Landrum story published later often summarise this as “the car was so hot it burned her,” the original testimony is somewhat more restrained. Landrum described a specific action—leaning on the upper door area while holding Colby—and connected that position to later injuries, rather than claiming that every part of the vehicle was untouchable. That distinction matters because it limits what her testimony can establish.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
What Contact Burns Can and Cannot Prove
If a person genuinely receives a thermal contact burn from touching painted automotive bodywork, the metal surface must have reached a temperature capable of transferring damaging heat to the skin. However, the severity of any burn depends on more than temperature alone.
Several variables influence whether contact produces injury:
- how long the skin remained in contact with the surface;
- whether pressure increased heat transfer;
- whether clothing partially insulated the contact;
- the thickness and sensitivity of the affected skin;
- whether the surface had been heated uniformly or only locally.
Because none of these factors were measured, Landrum’s account cannot be converted into a reliable estimate of the car’s surface temperature. A painful contact might occur at temperatures well below those that would visibly blister automotive paint or permanently deform steel panels. Conversely, if the contact lasted only briefly, substantially higher temperatures might be required to produce injury. The testimony alone does not resolve which situation applied.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
The claim also differs from Betty Cash’s separate account of using her leather jacket to grasp the driver’s door handle. Together, the two stories suggest that more than one part of the vehicle felt dangerously hot to the witnesses, but they remain separate observations rather than mutually confirming physical measurements.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Limits of Reconstructing the Surface Temperature
The principal obstacle is that no investigator measured the vehicle while any heat would still have been present. By the time researchers examined the Oldsmobile, only longer-term physical features such as reported dashboard impressions were available for discussion. No documented thermal survey, metallurgical examination or paint analysis established whether the exterior panels had experienced unusual heating.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comcash landrum theory analysisBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: Cash-Landrum Theory & Analysis: Unpublished 2002 Wim van Utrecht Article…
As a result, several competing explanations remain difficult to eliminate conclusively:
- the upper door panel genuinely became hot enough to burn exposed skin;
- Landrum’s injury arose from a combination of radiant heating and brief contact rather than conductive heating from the metal alone;
- the injury had another medical cause that happened to coincide with where she remembered leaning.
The surviving evidence does not allow investigators to distinguish confidently between these possibilities because the physical state of the car immediately after the encounter was never documented in a way that permits later reconstruction.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comcash landrum theory analysisBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: Cash-Landrum Theory & Analysis: Unpublished 2002 Wim van Utrecht Article…
Why the Claim Still Matters Within the Heat Evidence
Within the broader discussion of reported heat effects, Landrum’s arm-contact account occupies an important but carefully limited position. It is one of the few witness statements describing direct physical contact with the vehicle rather than simply exposure to a hot environment. That makes it more specific than general descriptions of feeling overheated or seeing bright light.
Its value, however, lies primarily as eyewitness testimony rather than independent physical proof. The statement is internally consistent with Landrum’s explanation of how she positioned herself while comforting Colby, and she repeatedly associated later arm marks with that moment. Yet because neither the injury nor the vehicle’s surface was documented in a way that permits quantitative analysis, the claim cannot establish how hot the car body actually became.
For that reason, researchers who regard the Cash–Landrum incident as unusually compelling often cite the arm-contact episode as one element within a larger pattern of reported heat effects, while sceptical analyses emphasise that it remains an unverified personal account rather than a measured physical trace. Both perspectives agree on the central evidential point: Landrum’s testimony records what she believed happened, but it does not by itself determine the temperature reached by the car’s bodywork.[cufon.org]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
