Modern cognitive psychology distinguishes between recognising an object and assigning it a category or name.

Separating recognition from later classification
The distinction between recognition and classification is important because critics and supporters of the Cash–Landrum case sometimes treat them as identical.
Recognition concerns what the witnesses actually perceived:
- numerous helicopters,
- unusually large aircraft,
- tandem rotor appearance,
- military impression.
Classification concerns the later conclusion that these aircraft were specifically CH-47 Chinooks operated by a particular military service.
These are different evidential claims. Someone may sincerely recognise a distinctive silhouette while remaining uncertain about its official designation until later comparison with reference material.
Likewise, later confidence in the label does not necessarily prove that every associated detail was present in the original memory.
Why the service branch became another point of debate
Once the helicopters were labelled as Chinooks, attention shifted to which branch of the United States military might have operated them.
