Introduction

The meeting at Bergstrom Air Force Base on 17 August 1981 was not an official investigation into unidentified flying objects. Instead, it was a legal interview conducted by Air Force claims personnel after Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Colby Landrum had been referred to the base through congressional offices while seeking compensation for their alleged injuries. The session served two practical purposes: to place the witnesses’ account on the record and to explain the administrative claims process available for lawsuits against the United States government. That distinction is essential to understanding the later Cash–Landrum litigation. The Air Force lawyers accepted a detailed factual statement from the witnesses without suggesting that the service had reopened any programme to investigate the reported object or determine whether military aircraft were involved.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…Published: August 17, 1981

Who attended the recorded meeting

The interview took place in the Law Library of Building 2102 at Bergstrom Air Force Base near Austin, Texas, beginning at approximately 10:40 a.m. The proceedings were recorded with the witnesses’ consent so that an accurate record would exist if the matter later required administrative or legal review. Captain John Camp, the Acting Staff Judge Advocate, opened the session by explaining why the recording was being made and identifying everyone present.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…Published: August 17, 1981

The transcript shows that the meeting began much like a legal deposition rather than an investigative interrogation. Each witness identified themselves and confirmed personal details before Captain Camp asked Betty Cash to describe the events chronologically, beginning with the date, location and circumstances of the reported encounter.[Noufors]noufors.comTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

What the Air Force lawyers asked

Rather than attempting to prove or disprove the existence of a UFO, the questioning focused on producing a coherent factual record suitable for a government claims file.

Captain Camp encouraged the witnesses to provide a complete narrative in their own words before interrupting with clarifying questions. The interview covered:

  • the exact location along Farm-to-Market Road 1485;
  • the time and sequence of events;
  • descriptions of the luminous object;
  • the reported heat experienced by the occupants of the vehicle;
  • the witnesses’ observations of numerous military-style helicopters;
  • the physical symptoms that followed;
  • subsequent medical treatment and other consequences.[Noufors]noufors.comTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

The lawyers also sought clarification whenever geographic locations, names or timelines required greater precision. This is characteristic of administrative fact-finding intended to preserve a reliable record rather than to evaluate extraordinary claims about unidentified aerial phenomena. The transcript contains repeated requests to spell place names, identify routes and establish exactly who observed particular events.[Noufors]noufors.comTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewTranscript, Cash-Landrum InterviewJune 10, 2002…Published: June 10, 2002

What the lawyers explained about compensation

An equally important part of the meeting concerned the legal process for seeking damages from the federal government.

Captain Camp explained that if the witnesses wished to pursue compensation, the legal office could provide the necessary claim forms and explain the administrative procedure. However, both he and Captain Davis emphasised that they were government attorneys, not private lawyers acting on behalf of the claimants. They therefore could not provide personal legal advice and recommended that the witnesses consult independent counsel before completing the paperwork.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…

The discussion also established several procedural points:

  • each claimant would need to submit an individual claim rather than a single family application;
  • supporting documentation would strengthen the submission;
  • written statements and evidence would accompany the official forms;
  • the claims would receive ordinary administrative consideration under existing federal procedures rather than special treatment because the allegations involved an unusual incident.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…

These explanations illustrate that the meeting was fundamentally administrative. The legal office’s role was to receive and process claims, not to determine whether the underlying account was true.

Why this was not a UFO investigation

One of the most revealing exchanges came when Captain Camp addressed the witnesses’ expectations regarding an official inquiry.

He explained that the Air Force no longer maintained an organisation responsible for investigating UFO reports. Referring to the end of the Air Force’s earlier UFO programme more than a decade before, he stated that he knew of no office within the service that currently investigated such complaints. Nevertheless, he offered to forward their account to any agency that might consider it appropriate, while making clear that he could not promise any further investigation.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…

Betty Cash immediately clarified that Senator Lloyd Bentsen had not directed her to Bergstrom for a UFO investigation but to file a compensation claim. Captain Camp agreed that assisting with the claims process was precisely what the legal office could do. This exchange captures the central purpose of the meeting: the witnesses sought damages, while the Air Force legal staff addressed only the procedural path for pursuing those damages.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…

Nothing in the transcript indicates that the Bergstrom personnel attempted to reopen Project Blue Book, assemble an investigative team or verify the reported object’s identity. Their responsibilities lay within military legal administration rather than operational investigation.

What the interview accomplished

Although the meeting did not produce an official explanation for the reported encounter, it had lasting procedural significance.

The recorded interview became one of the earliest comprehensive first-person accounts taken by government personnel after the incident. It documented the witnesses’ descriptions before the later federal litigation and preserved details that would subsequently be cited by researchers, journalists and lawyers studying the case. The recording also established that the Air Force accepted receipt of the witnesses’ allegations while carefully avoiding any admission that government aircraft or personnel had been involved.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…Published: August 17, 1981

Equally important, the meeting marked the transition from informal correspondence with elected representatives to the formal administrative claims process. The witnesses left Bergstrom with an explanation of how to pursue compensation, but without any commitment that the Air Force would investigate the reported object or acknowledge responsibility. That distinction shaped every later stage of the Cash–Landrum case, including the eventual federal lawsuit.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
