Why the delay made relocation harder

What a proper gridded roadside survey required

If investigators had recognised uncertainty over the location from the outset, the strongest approach would not have been a single pass over one assumed site. Instead, they would have treated the uncertainty itself as part of the investigation.

A robust environmental survey would ideally have included:

  • Establishing a search corridor covering every plausible witness location rather than a single estimated point.
  • Dividing that corridor into mapped grid sections with recorded coordinates.
  • Measuring background radiation away from the alleged encounter before comparing readings within the search area.
  • Surveying both the roadway and adjoining verges, drainage ditches, soil and vegetation.
  • Recording instrument type, calibration information, weather conditions and exact measurement positions.
  • Collecting labelled soil and vegetation samples from multiple grid locations for laboratory analysis where warranted.

Such a design would not guarantee a positive finding. It would, however, allow later investigators to determine precisely where measurements had and had not been taken.

What the negative result can and cannot establish

The reported negative survey remains useful evidence, but only within clear limits.

It supports the proposition that investigators did not detect abnormal residual radiation where they actually conducted their measurements in September 1981.
