The surviving witness accounts indicate that Colby was not an independent observer moving freely around the roadside. Betty Cash reportedly left the vehicle for longer periods despite the intense heat, while Vickie Landrum briefly stepped outside before returning to reassure her grandson. Why his viewpoint matters to the testimony

Colby’s physical location is important because it affects how historians and investigators evaluate what his evidence can—and cannot—establish.

His testimony is strongest when describing features directly in front of him, particularly:

  • the object’s general outline;
  • its exceptional brightness;
  • its apparent position relative to the car;
  • his emotional reaction to what he saw.

It is less informative regarding:

  • the exact timing of events;
  • movements occurring behind or beside the vehicle;
  • the full sequence of Betty Cash leaving and returning to the car;
