Introduction
The 17 August 1981 interview conducted at Bergstrom Air Force Base is the earliest surviving extended recorded account in which Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum described the flame beneath the object in their own words. For the specific question of whether the object emitted intermittent bursts rather than a continuous glow, this interview is the most important primary source. It preserves details that later summaries often compress or simplify, including descriptions of repeated surges of fire, changes in sound, and the witnesses’ attempts to relate the bursts to the object’s movement. At the same time, the transcript documents eyewitness testimony rather than independently verified measurements, so it records what the witnesses said they experienced rather than establishing the physical properties of the phenomenon.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Cash’s description of fire from the underside
Betty Cash consistently described the emission as active fire coming from the underside of the object rather than a steady light. In the Bergstrom interview she explained that the object had descended to roughly treetop height over the road and that “fire was shooting out the bottom,” making it impossible, in her view, to drive beneath it. This description places the flame at the centre of her decision to stop the vehicle rather than treating it as a secondary visual feature.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
The transcript contains a further detail that is frequently omitted from later retellings. Cash did not describe one uninterrupted column of flame. Instead, she recalled a repeating sequence in which:
- fire would shoot out from beneath the object;
- the emission would then “let up”;
- each reduction was accompanied by what she likened to air brakes or a “whooshing” sound.
This rhythm of discharge followed by partial reduction is significant because it shows that her memory centred on changing behaviour rather than constant appearance. She was describing a cycle of activity, not merely an intensely bright object suspended above the road.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgUFOs at close sight: the Cash-Landrum case, 1980, USAF interview part I…
Cash also connected these bursts to the intense heat she believed she experienced. She told the interviewers that the vehicle became so hot she had to use her leather jacket to open the door, and she placed these events within the same sequence as the intermittent fire. Whether the reported heating occurred exactly as remembered cannot be verified from the transcript alone, but the interview demonstrates that, in her recollection, the flame, heat and sound formed one continuous episode rather than separate observations.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Landrum’s account of repeated bursts
Vickie Landrum’s testimony complements Cash’s but also adds important qualifications. When shown Cash’s drawing, Landrum immediately remarked that “the fire was coming right down” beneath the object, reinforcing that the downward emission was among the first features she wanted recorded.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Later in the interview, however, Landrum made clear that the brightness limited what she believed she could distinguish. Rather than claiming she could identify multiple individual exhaust streams or mechanical nozzles, she explained that the glare prevented such detail. Her account therefore supports the presence of repeated flame while avoiding claims about precise engineering features.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgUFOs at close sight: the Cash-Landrum case, 1980, USAF interview part I…
The most distinctive contribution from Landrum concerns the apparent relationship between the bursts and the object’s motion. She described a recurring pattern in which the object seemed to rise as the fire intensified and settle lower when the flame diminished. According to her recollection, this cycle repeated before a final, larger burst after which the object climbed away. In simplified form, her testimony describes:
- a downward burst of flame;
- an upward movement of the object;
- a reduction in flame followed by a lower hover;
- a final stronger burst before departure.
This sequence has often been interpreted by later writers as resembling variable thrust. That comparison is an interpretation of the witness account, not something stated by the witnesses themselves. The Bergstrom interview records only their observations of apparent correlation between flame intensity and movement.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgUFOs at close sight: the Cash-Landrum case, 1980, USAF interview part I…
What the transcript does not establish
The Bergstrom interview is valuable because it preserves relatively unfiltered witness testimony, but it also has clear evidential limits.
First, it does not establish the physical nature of the flame. The witnesses consistently used ordinary language such as “fire” or “flames,” yet the interview contains no measurements of temperature, composition, combustion products or exhaust velocity. The transcript therefore cannot determine whether the visible emission was combustion, plasma, reflected light or another phenomenon.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Second, the interview does not prove that the bursts produced propulsion. Although Landrum described the object rising when the flame intensified, the recording documents a perceived temporal relationship rather than a demonstrated mechanical cause. Without independent measurements or physical evidence, the interview cannot distinguish between genuine thrust, an optical coincidence or errors of perception during an intensely stressful event.[Ufologie]ufologie.patrickgross.orgUFOs at close sight: the Cash-Landrum case, 1980, USAF interview part I…
Third, the transcript does not support some of the cleaner visual reconstructions that later became common in books, documentaries and online illustrations. The witnesses repeatedly emphasised overwhelming brightness and heat, conditions that naturally reduce visual precision. Their testimony is therefore less geometrically exact than many later artistic depictions suggest.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
Why the Bergstrom account remains the key flame evidence
Among the available primary documents connected with the Cash–Landrum incident, the Bergstrom Air Force Base interview remains the clearest surviving record of how the principal witnesses described the flame beneath the object only months after the event. Its importance lies less in proving what the object was than in preserving details that later summaries often compress.
Those details include the repeated cycle of flame and reduction, Cash’s comparison of the accompanying sound to air brakes or a whooshing release, Landrum’s cautious acknowledgement that the brightness obscured fine detail, and her description of the apparent link between successive flame bursts and changes in altitude. Together, these features make the Bergstrom transcript the principal documentary source for claims that the reported emission was intermittent rather than continuous, while also illustrating the distinction between faithfully recording witness testimony and establishing the underlying physical reality.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981…
