Introduction

One of the more technically interesting aspects of the Cash–Landrum incident is the reported pattern of heating inside the car. The witnesses described an intense luminous object positioned ahead of and above their vehicle, followed by claims that the dashboard softened, the windscreen area became extremely hot and the occupants experienced severe discomfort while the cabin air did not appear to heat uniformly. If those observations were accurate, they point towards a mechanism dominated initially by radiant energy rather than by hot air flowing into the passenger compartment. How Radiation Heats Surfaces Before Air

Radiant heating differs fundamentally from heating by convection. A hot object can emit electromagnetic radiation that travels directly through space and deposits energy wherever it is absorbed. The intervening air may remain comparatively cool at first because the energy is not primarily transferred by heating the air molecules.

In an ordinary car parked in sunshine, the same principle is familiar. Solar radiation passes through the windscreen, is absorbed by the dashboard, steering wheel, seats and other interior surfaces, and those surfaces subsequently warm the surrounding air. Automotive engineers devote considerable effort to reducing this effect because it is the main cause of parked vehicles becoming excessively hot. Applied to the Cash–Landrum reports, this mechanism provides a physically coherent sequence if the reported source emitted an exceptionally intense radiant flux:

  1. Radiation reached the windscreen.
  2. Part of the energy was absorbed by the laminated glass.
  3. Part continued into the passenger compartment.
  4. The dashboard and forward interior absorbed much of that energy.
  5. Those heated surfaces then warmed nearby occupants and only afterwards increased the cabin air temperature.

This sequence predicts stronger heating of the front interior than the rear, consistent with a source reported to be directly ahead of the vehicle rather than surrounding it.

Glass Transmission and Dashboard Absorption

A windscreen is not an all-or-nothing thermal shield. Its behaviour depends on the wavelength of the incoming radiation.

Standard automotive laminated glass is highly transparent to visible light, which is why drivers can see through it. It is far less transparent to much of the longer-wave infrared radiation emitted by warm objects, while the near-infrared portion associated with sunlight can still contribute substantially to interior heating. That distinction matters because the emission spectrum of the alleged object is completely unknown.

If the source emitted mainly visible light and near-infrared radiation, then substantial energy could plausibly have reached interior components. Dark dashboard materials are particularly efficient absorbers of visible and near-infrared radiation, converting incoming light into heat. As the dashboard temperature increased, it would then radiate thermal infrared and conduct heat into adjacent trim, the steering column and nearby cabin air.

This process would naturally create several observable effects before the cabin became uniformly hot:

  • the dashboard heating faster than the seats;
  • increased radiant heat felt by occupants facing forwards;
  • warming concentrated near the windscreen;
  • relatively slower heating of enclosed air compared with exposed solid surfaces.

That pattern resembles the familiar greenhouse effect in parked vehicles, although the witnesses described a far more intense and much more rapid version than ordinary sunlight could produce. Does the Witness Testimony Fit This Mechanism?

The Bergstrom Air Force interview contains several observations that are at least qualitatively consistent with front-directed radiant heating.

Betty Cash described remaining inside the car while the brilliant object was visible ahead. She later reported that the interior became unbearably hot, that the air conditioning was used after the object departed, and that the dashboard developed impressions after apparently softening. Importantly, none of these observations requires the windscreen itself to have transmitted every form of radiation equally well. Even if the glass absorbed a substantial fraction of the incident energy, the heated glass would itself become a secondary radiator and conductor of heat into the cabin. The dashboard immediately behind it would receive energy both directly and indirectly from the hot windscreen.

From a heat-transfer perspective, that creates several parallel pathways:

  • direct transmission of radiation through the glass;
  • absorption and heating of the laminated glass;
  • re-radiation from the warmed glass towards the interior;
  • conduction through the windscreen assembly into adjacent structures;
  • subsequent convection as heated interior surfaces warmed the cabin air.

These pathways reinforce one another without requiring any single mechanism to explain every reported effect.

Why the Windscreen Alone Cannot Explain the Event

Although the heat path through the windscreen is mechanically plausible, it does not establish that the witnesses’ reported temperatures were actually reached.

Several major unknowns prevent a meaningful calculation of the required energy:

  • the true distance between the object and the car;
  • the object’s physical size;
  • the duration of maximum exposure;
  • the angular orientation of the source relative to the windscreen;
  • the emission spectrum of the source;
  • whether the reported glow represented reflected light, combustion products or another process;
  • the optical and thermal properties of the specific 1980 Oldsmobile windscreen and dashboard materials.

Because radiant intensity decreases rapidly with distance according to the inverse-square law for a point-like source, even modest errors in estimated distance would produce very large differences in the energy required to reproduce the reported heating.

Similarly, without knowing the spectrum of the emitted radiation, it is impossible to determine how much energy would have been transmitted through the glass, how much would have been absorbed within the laminate and how much would have been reflected away. What This Mechanism Can—and Cannot—Support

The proposed heat path through the windscreen supports one limited conclusion: if an intense radiant source were positioned in front of the vehicle, the dashboard and front interior would be expected to heat before the entire cabin air reached equilibrium. That prediction follows directly from established principles of radiative heat transfer and is consistent with why ordinary vehicles become hot in sunlight.

However, the mechanism alone does not validate the extraordinary claims made in the Cash–Landrum case. It cannot determine whether the reported dashboard deformation, severe occupant injuries or other alleged effects actually occurred as described, nor can it identify the nature of the supposed source. Those questions depend on evidence that was never obtained, including contemporaneous temperature measurements, material testing, spectral observations and accurate geometric reconstruction.

The windscreen therefore occupies an important but limited place in the physical analysis.
