Introduction
The witness accounts in the Cash–Landrum incident do not describe a single, unchanging illness. Instead, they portray a sequence in which the earliest complaints appeared during the journey home or within hours of the alleged encounter, followed by worsening skin and eye problems over the next several days, and finally longer-term complaints such as hair loss and persistent sensitivity. This chronology matters because later retellings often compress the events into one dramatic episode, whereas the surviving interviews and legal records indicate that the symptoms unfolded in stages rather than all at once. The reported timeline is also one of the key reasons the case has remained controversial: while the witnesses consistently described progression over time, the medical significance and cause of that progression remain disputed.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
Symptoms During the Journey Home
According to Betty Cash, the first changes began very soon after the encounter ended. She described feeling intensely hot, as though she had suffered severe sunburn, and becoming increasingly weak while driving. During the following hours she reported extreme thirst, burning eyes and growing nausea. These complaints formed the earliest phase of the illness rather than its most severe stage.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
The other witnesses described a similar early pattern, although generally less severe:
- Burning or irritated eyes.
- Nausea and stomach upset.
- Diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort.
- Weakness and fatigue.
- A sensation resembling severe sunburn.
Colby Landrum later told Air Force interviewers that he did not remember feeling ill during the sighting itself but awoke the next morning with severe stomach pain and diarrhoea, illustrating that not every witness placed the onset at exactly the same moment.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
The surviving interview record therefore suggests that gastrointestinal complaints and heat-like symptoms formed the first stage of the reported illness rather than the end of it.
How the Illness Changed Over the Following Days
The most notable feature of the witnesses’ accounts is that they describe worsening symptoms rather than rapid recovery.
Betty Cash consistently stated that the apparent sunburn-like effects developed into something more serious over the next several days. She reported increasing swelling of her face, lips and ears, worsening weakness and dehydration, followed by the appearance of painful blisters and areas where skin peeled away. These later skin changes became central to subsequent descriptions of the case because they were not presented as immediate effects at the roadside but as complications emerging after returning home.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
Vickie Landrum’s chronology followed a broadly similar pattern on a smaller scale. Rather than reporting extensive burns immediately, she described continuing eye irritation, nausea and weakness before later developing skin lesions and blistering. Her account likewise places these developments after the initial gastrointestinal symptoms rather than simultaneously with them.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
An important feature of the testimony is that the witnesses repeatedly distinguished between the immediate discomfort and the more dramatic physical changes that appeared later. This distinction is sometimes lost in abbreviated summaries of the incident.
Delayed Complaints Reported Weeks Later
The latest stage of the reported illness involved complaints that appeared days or weeks after the encounter and, according to the witnesses, sometimes persisted for much longer.
Betty Cash reported substantial hair loss after the earlier skin problems had already developed. She also described continuing sensitivity to sunlight and heat, recurring weakness and prolonged recovery that included hospital treatment. In later interviews she maintained that some symptoms returned or worsened when exposed to heat, although these remained self-reported experiences rather than independently verified effects.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
Vickie Landrum also later reported hair loss, although less extensively than Cash, together with ongoing eye problems that she said required continued medical attention. During the Air Force interview she discussed consulting an ophthalmologist because her eye symptoms had not resolved.[Cufon]cufon.orgBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2Bergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 2 of 2…
Colby Landrum’s reported delayed symptoms were comparatively limited. Later accounts describe a smaller area of hair loss and continued eye irritation, but his recollections remained less detailed than those of the two adult witnesses.[Cufon]cufon.orgcashlaniCufonBergstrom AFB Interview of Betty Cash, Vickie & Colby Landrum, Part 1 of 2August 17, 1981
Why the Timeline Matters
The chronology is significant because it provides a more nuanced picture than many popular retellings. The witnesses did not consistently claim that every symptom appeared immediately after the alleged encounter. Instead, the available testimony points to three broad phases:
- Immediate phase: burning sensations, nausea, gastrointestinal complaints, thirst and weakness.
- Progressive phase over several days: increasing swelling, blistering, skin lesions and persistent eye irritation.
- Delayed phase over subsequent weeks: hair loss, continuing eye problems and longer-term weakness, especially in Betty Cash. Cufon
This staged progression became an important element in later arguments that the witnesses had experienced exposure to an unusual environmental hazard. However, neither the chronology itself nor the reported symptoms establish what caused the illness. Court proceedings ultimately failed to identify evidence linking the reported medical problems to any confirmed government aircraft or known exposure, and sceptical investigators have argued that the available medical evidence does not conclusively support radiation injury despite the witnesses’ descriptions.
