Introduction

One of the most striking features of the Cash–Landrum witnesses’ account is the repeated claim that the brilliant diamond-shaped object descended as its fiery exhaust weakened, then climbed again whenever another burst of flame erupted. This sequence has often been interpreted as evidence of a propulsion system producing vertical thrust. However, the reported motion was judged entirely by human observers at night, without photographs, range measurements, radar data or any independent record of the object’s changing altitude. That leaves open an important alternative question: could changes in brightness and glare have altered the witnesses’ perception of the object’s height and apparent movement rather than recording repeated mechanical rises and falls? The available evidence cannot answer that question definitively, but it allows a comparison between the reported behaviour and known characteristics of human night vision.

The witnesses consistently described a repeating cycle. During the brightest eruptions of flame from beneath the object, it appeared to lift upwards. As the flame diminished, it seemed to settle back towards the road before another burst occurred. What is important is that the reported vertical movement was inseparable from changes in brightness. The same event that supposedly generated lift also dramatically increased the intensity of light reaching the observers. Because there was no fixed instrument measuring elevation, the perceived ascent depended entirely on visual judgement under unusually difficult viewing conditions.

That does not prove the motion was illusory. It simply means the evidence cannot separate physical displacement from perceptual effects using objective measurements.

How glare can alter perceived position

Vision scientists have long recognised that extremely bright lights viewed against a dark background can produce misleading impressions of size, distance and movement. Several mechanisms are relevant to the Cash–Landrum descriptions.

First, intense glare reduces the eye’s ability to identify the edges of an object. Instead of seeing a sharply defined outline, observers often perceive a glowing halo whose apparent size expands and contracts as brightness changes. A brighter emission can therefore make an object appear larger or closer without any physical movement.

Second, bright light produces retinal scatter and temporary after-images. During night viewing, these effects can cause a luminous source to appear displaced or to “float” slightly relative to nearby landmarks, particularly when there are few stable visual references. Third, judging altitude at night is intrinsically difficult. Without multiple depth cues, observers rely heavily on apparent brightness, angular size and comparison with silhouettes such as trees or utility poles. If the apparent diameter of a luminous source changes because of glare, the brain may unconsciously reinterpret both its distance and its height.

These mechanisms are well established in visual perception research. Their existence does not explain any specific UFO report by itself, but they provide plausible pathways by which perceived vertical motion could become exaggerated or even created.

Mechanical motion versus perceptual movement

The propulsion interpretation assumes that each burst of flame genuinely increased thrust, causing the object to climb before settling again.

The perceptual interpretation proposes something more limited:

  • the object may have moved less than remembered, or remained nearly stationary;
  • changing flame intensity altered the size and brightness of the surrounding glow;
  • the expanding luminous envelope changed the apparent relationship between the object and the nearby treeline;
  • observers interpreted the changing image as repeated upward and downward motion.

Neither explanation can presently be verified because no independent measurements exist. An additional consideration is that the witnesses were simultaneously dealing with extraordinary heat, fear and intense illumination. Cognitive psychology does not suggest that stressful conditions inevitably produce inaccurate memories, but it does show that stress can affect the precision with which dynamic visual events are reconstructed after the fact. Consequently, confidence in the remembered sequence does not necessarily establish the exact physical behaviour of the object.

Why the glare hypothesis remains incomplete

Although glare provides a credible mechanism for misjudging altitude, it cannot explain every element of the reported encounter.

The witnesses did not merely describe an expanding light. They consistently maintained that they observed a structured object with a diamond-like outline and that it repeatedly emitted downward jets of flame accompanied by sound and heat. Likewise, glare alone cannot account for the reported thermal effects or the witnesses’ later claims about helicopters, which belong to separate evidential questions. The apparent-motion hypothesis is therefore a narrow perceptual alternative rather than a complete explanation of the incident.

What can reasonably be concluded?

From the available evidence, it is not possible to establish that the object physically rose and fell exactly as remembered. Every description of its vertical motion comes from observers looking at an exceptionally bright source under night-time conditions that are known to complicate depth perception.

The link the witnesses drew between each fiery burst and renewed ascent is internally consistent across later retellings, but consistency alone cannot distinguish genuine mechanical movement from changes in the apparent position of an intensely luminous object.
