The only formal environmental radiation investigation connected with the Cash–Landrum incident was carried out by the Texas Department of Health (TDH) in September 1981, roughly nine months after the reported encounter. The investigation originated after witness Vickie Landrum sought assistance from Texas state representative Larry Browder. In response, the Texas Department of Health assigned its Bureau of Radiation Control to conduct an environmental examination. The inspection involved two principal steps:

What the laboratory result actually ruled out
The laboratory findings are narrower than they are sometimes presented in discussions of the case.
The negative soil analysis supports the conclusion that investigators found no persistent radioactive contamination at the sampled location in September 1981. Had substantial quantities of long-lived radioactive material been deposited at the site, investigators expected at least some measurable residue to remain months later. What the radiation survey contributes to the case
From an evidential perspective, the Texas Department of Health investigation remains the most formal environmental examination associated with the Cash–Landrum incident.
Its significance lies in what it did—and did not—demonstrate:
