What Does the Hair Loss Record Really Show?

Introduction
Hair loss became one of the Cash–Landrum incident’s most memorable medical details because it appeared to offer a visible sign of radiation injury. Later retellings often say that Betty Cash began losing clumps or large patches of hair almost immediately after the alleged encounter of 29 December 1980. The surviving chronology is less straightforward. A physician reportedly recorded little or no hair loss when Cash entered hospital in early January, while more conspicuous loss developed later and was described in the records as alopecia.

That distinction matters. Radiation can cause hair loss, but the timing, distribution and required dose must fit a recognisable clinical pattern. Alopecia, meanwhile, is not a diagnosis of cause by itself: it simply means hair loss, and specific forms such as alopecia areata may arise through inflammatory or autoimmune processes. The Cash–Landrum evidence therefore supports the limited conclusion that Cash experienced significant hair loss after the incident. It does not, on its own, establish radiation exposure or identify the reported aerial object as the cause.
When did the hair loss reportedly begin?
The strongest version of the story places dramatic hair loss at the very beginning of Cash’s hospital treatment. Frequently repeated accounts state that she arrived unable to walk, with damaged skin and hair coming away in clumps. The chronology attributed to Cash’s underlying medical notes is different. A later critical review by physician Gary Posner, drawing on the medical narrative reproduced in John Schuessler’s 1998 book, reports that Cash was admitted on 2 January and that her attending doctor initially observed “little, if any” hair loss. This does not mean the later hair loss was invented. Schuessler’s book, which argues strongly that the witnesses were injured by emissions from the object, treats Cash’s progressive hair loss as a genuine part of her illness. Photographs circulated in documentaries and UFO publications also helped establish the image of pronounced scalp exposure. The timing is medically important because radiation-induced epilation is generally delayed. Standard clinical guidance associates temporary hair loss after a substantial local radiation dose with onset roughly two to three weeks after exposure, not immediate shedding on the night of exposure or at hospital admission only a few days later. Cash’s reported development of visible hair loss weeks later is therefore not inherently incompatible with radiation injury. The problem is that timing alone is non-specific. A delayed onset may fit radiation-induced epilation, but it may also fit other forms of alopecia triggered or noticed during illness. Without a measured exposure, scalp-dose estimate, biopsy or contemporaneous specialist reasoning that excluded alternatives, the interval cannot decide the argument.
What did the alopecia diagnosis mean?
The word alopecia has sometimes been treated in discussions of the incident as though it contradicted the existence of hair loss. It does not. Alopecia is the medical term for partial or complete hair loss; the key question is what type was diagnosed and what the clinician believed had caused it.
Critical accounts of the case say Cash’s notes attributed the loss to alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a chronic inflammatory disorder in which the immune system targets hair follicles. The reported alopecia diagnosis therefore provides a plausible alternative explanation, but it is not a complete disproof of exposure. Several uncertainties remain:

- “Alopecia” may have been used descriptively in some notes, while “alopecia areata” would be a more specific clinical judgement.

- Radiation injury and other scalp conditions are not distinguished merely by the amount of hair lost; pattern, dose history, skin findings and microscopic evidence matter.
The most defensible reading is consequently narrower than either side often allows. The records reportedly contain a conventional dermatological explanation for Cash’s hair loss. That weakens claims that the symptom was uniquely diagnostic of radiation, but the fragmentary public record prevents a confident retrospective determination of its exact cause.
How well does the radiation interpretation fit?
Hair loss is powerful evidence rhetorically because it evokes familiar images of cancer treatment and nuclear accidents. Clinically, however, it must be interpreted alongside dose-dependent effects elsewhere in the body. Temporary radiation epilation generally requires a substantial local scalp dose, while blistering and moist skin loss occur at still higher local doses. The Cash–Landrum case lacks a verified source, personal dosimetry and a documented reconstruction of how radiation could have been delivered. No surviving measurement establishes that Cash’s scalp received the several-gray local dose associated with temporary epilation. Nor has the publicly available evidence demonstrated a dose distribution explaining why her reported symptoms varied across the scalp, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal system while remaining survivable.
Supportive summaries generally reverse that process: they begin with the symptoms, identify a resemblance to radiation injury and infer an unknown radiation-like emission. Consistency is weaker than diagnosis. Hair loss, redness, nausea and weakness may occur after radiation exposure, but they are not specific enough to prove it retrospectively. How later summaries changed the claim
The hair-loss narrative appears to have strengthened through repeated condensation. What does the record really show?
The hair-loss evidence is neither meaningless nor decisive. It supports four cautious conclusions.

Third, the records reportedly included an alopecia diagnosis, possibly alopecia areata, offering a recognised non-radiation explanation. The dispute survives because both sides can point to one part of the chronology. Radiation proponents emphasise the later, conspicuous loss and its broadly compatible delay. Critics emphasise the modest findings on admission, the alopecia assessment and the absence of dosimetry or diagnostic proof. The full record therefore shows an important medical event whose cause remains unresolved—not a symptom that independently verifies the wider Cash–Landrum radiation narrative.
