Introduction
The reported helicopter sighting by Lamar Walker and his wife is often presented as one of the strongest pieces of independent support for the Cash–Landrum incident. However, the value of their testimony depends not only on what they said they saw, but also on when they first described it. That delay does not mean the Walkers fabricated their account. It does, however, make it much harder to establish with confidence that their recollections of the date, timing, route, number of helicopters and relationship to the Cash–Landrum encounter remained precise. The key historical question is therefore not whether the Walkers appeared sincere, but how much evidential weight can safely be placed on a retrospective account recorded long after the event.
When the Walkers Were Interviewed
According to published case summaries, investigators interviewed Patrolman Lamar Walker and his wife in May 1982. They reportedly stated that they had observed approximately twelve Chinook-type helicopters, including one or more using a bright downward-facing light, on the same night and in roughly the same area as the Cash–Landrum incident. The timing of that interview is important because, by mid-1982:

Memory researchers have long found that genuinely remembered events can become unintentionally reshaped by later information without witnesses consciously inventing details.
Which Details Were Most Vulnerable to Memory Error
A delay of seventeen months affects some aspects of testimony far more than others.
Calendar date
People frequently remember an unusual experience while becoming less certain about exactly which day it occurred. Unless supported by diaries, work schedules, police records or other contemporary documentation, retrospectively assigning an event to a specific date becomes increasingly uncertain over time.
For the Walker account, that matters because its significance depends almost entirely on matching the helicopter sighting to 29 December 1980 rather than another evening.
Time of night
Night-time observations are especially difficult to anchor retrospectively.
Even if the Walkers accurately remembered seeing helicopters after dark, distinguishing between 8.00 pm, 9.00 pm or 10.00 pm many months later is considerably more difficult. Small shifts in remembered time could affect whether their observation overlaps with the reported Cash–Landrum encounter.
Flight direction and route
Witnesses often retain a broad impression of movement while losing confidence in precise bearings or flight paths.
Descriptions such as helicopters travelling “west” or moving across a general area may remain broadly accurate while becoming less reliable as evidence for reconstructing exact routes. Without contemporaneous notes or radar data, later investigators cannot confidently determine whether the helicopters observed by the Walkers would have intersected the location reported by Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum.
Number of helicopters
Estimating multiple moving aircraft at night is inherently difficult.
The Walkers reportedly recalled approximately twelve helicopters, whereas the principal witnesses eventually described around twenty-three. Those figures are not necessarily incompatible—different observers could have seen different portions of a larger formation—but neither figure should be treated as a precise count. Large-group estimation is well known to become less accurate with time and repeated recollection.
Why Sincerity Does Not Guarantee Precise Recall
One of the more balanced aspects of official discussion is that neither government investigators nor later commentators generally accused the Walkers of deliberate deception.
Lieutenant Colonel George Sarran, who conducted the principal military investigation, reportedly regarded both the principal witnesses and the Walkers as credible in the sense that they appeared to be honestly reporting what they believed they had experienced. This illustrates an important distinction in evaluating eyewitness testimony:
- Credibility concerns whether witnesses appear honest.
- Accuracy concerns whether remembered details correspond precisely to historical reality.
A witness may sincerely believe every detail recalled while still making errors regarding dates, numbers, locations or sequences of events. Modern cognitive psychology consistently treats these as separate questions.
How Publicity May Have Influenced Later Recall
The timing of the interview introduces another methodological concern: post-event information.
By the time investigators contacted the Walkers, the Cash–Landrum story—including claims of numerous Chinook helicopters—had circulated within UFO organisations and news reports. That does not demonstrate contamination of memory, but it creates a possibility that investigators cannot eliminate.
Researchers studying eyewitness memory recognise several mechanisms that can subtly influence later recollection:
- repeated retelling tends to increase confidence without necessarily increasing accuracy;
- later discussions can reinforce broad narratives while altering specific details;
- people often merge personally remembered events with subsequently learned information.
Because there is no publicly available contemporaneous statement from the Walkers dating from late 1980 or early 1981, historians cannot compare an immediate account with the one recorded seventeen months later.
What the Delay Does Not Undermine
The reporting delay should not be used to dismiss the Walker account entirely.
Several features remain relatively resistant to memory decay:
- remembering that an unusual number of large helicopters were present;
- recognising the distinctive twin-rotor appearance of Chinook-type aircraft;
- recalling that one aircraft appeared to illuminate the ground with a bright light.
These are broad perceptual impressions rather than fine chronological details. If the Walkers genuinely observed an unusually large helicopter movement, it is plausible that such an event would remain memorable long afterwards.
The problem is not remembering that helicopters were present. The problem is determining whether those helicopters can confidently be matched to the specific Cash–Landrum timeline.
Why Historians Treat the Account as Limited Corroboration
Most careful assessments therefore place the Walker testimony somewhere between independent corroboration and weak anecdotal support.
It contributes independent evidence that unusual helicopter activity may have occurred in the broader Dayton–Huffman area around the relevant period. At the same time, several factors prevent it from becoming strong corroboration of the central Cash–Landrum narrative:
- the interview occurred approximately seventeen months after the event;
- there is no known contemporaneous written statement from the Walkers;
- they reported helicopters but not the alleged unidentified craft;
- the precise timing and geographic relationship to the principal encounter cannot be independently reconstructed;

Taken together, these limitations mean the Walker testimony is best understood as evidence that is potentially consistent with part of the Cash–Landrum story, rather than proof that both groups witnessed the same event.
