The result was not a definitive declaration that the helicopters were Boeing CH-47 Chinooks operated by a particular military unit. These visual comparisons mattered because identifying aircraft from memory is difficult, especially after a stressful event. Instead of asking the witnesses to recall technical designations such as “CH-47”, the interviewers allowed recognition to develop from visible features.
The process worked by reducing the number of plausible aircraft types. A witness who cannot remember a model designation may still recognise a distinctive silhouette, particularly one dominated by an unusual rotor arrangement.

The characteristic that consistently survived questioning was not a military designation but the presence of two large rotor systems mounted fore and aft. That feature is important because tandem-rotor helicopters are comparatively uncommon. In the United States military, the best-known example is the CH-47 Chinook. Unlike many aspects of eyewitness memory, the overall silhouette of a tandem-rotor helicopter is visually distinctive, making it easier to recognise than finer details such as serial numbers, unit insignia or exact paint schemes.
Subsequent Army documentation reflected this narrowing process. Why the identification stopped short of proving military ownership
The interview is frequently remembered as proving that Chinook helicopters escorted the unidentified object. The actual record is more restrained.
Even if the witnesses correctly recognised tandem-rotor helicopters, several separate questions remained unanswered:
- whether every helicopter observed had that configuration;
- whether the aircraft were definitely CH-47 Chinooks rather than another tandem-rotor design;
- who operated them;
- whether they were engaged in any official mission connected with the reported incident.
These distinctions became increasingly important during later investigations. Army and Air Force inquiries checked military flight records, National Guard units, Reserve aviation organisations and maintenance facilities but reported finding no documented operations matching the witnesses’ account in the relevant place and time. Why this exchange became so influential
The Chinook discussion became one of the most frequently cited parts of the Bergstrom interview because it converted an unusual claim into something investigators could test.
