Could Cash Really Read Air Force Markings?

What Cash Said During the Air Force Interview
The best evidence for how Betty Cash described the markings is the taped interview conducted at Bergstrom Air Force Base on 17 August 1981, roughly eight months after the incident. Rather than simply stating that she had clearly read “United States Air Force” on the helicopters, the transcript records Air Force investigators asking her several follow-up questions to establish exactly what she meant.
When asked what she saw, Cash initially answered that she had seen “United States Air Force”. The interviewers immediately sought clarification:
- whether the full words had been written out;
- whether the marking was round or linear;
- exactly which words she remembered seeing;
- and how the lettering appeared.
They then asked her to write the wording on paper “exactly as you saw it”. The Limits of Reading Aircraft Markings at Night
Whether such markings could realistically have been read depends on several factors that remain uncertain.
The witnesses consistently described:
- a rural road at night;
- an intensely bright object producing glare;
- emotional stress;
- multiple moving helicopters;
- and rapidly changing viewing angles.
These conditions are not favourable for identifying painted lettering on aircraft.

This does not necessarily indicate fabrication. Memory researchers have long recognised that repeated recall, discussion among witnesses, media exposure and formal interviews can increase confidence in memories without necessarily increasing their accuracy. In controversial cases, details that become legally or evidentially significant often receive repeated attention and may become more firmly integrated into later recollections even when their original observation was less certain.
Within the Cash–Landrum case, military identification carried obvious importance. If the helicopters belonged to the US Air Force, the encounter would appear connected to a government operation rather than an unexplained aerial event.
