Introduction

The Cash–Landrum incident has often been linked to the possibility of a secret American aircraft because the United States genuinely operated highly classified aerospace programmes during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Projects such as Have Blue and Tacit Blue remained hidden for years, while earlier experimental concepts such as the Avrocar looked unlike conventional aircraft. These programmes demonstrate that governments can successfully conceal unusual prototypes and that unfamiliar shapes alone are not evidence of extraterrestrial technology. They do not, however, demonstrate that every report of an extraordinary flying object can be explained by a hidden military vehicle. The historical record shows both the strengths and the limits of this comparison.

Why Have Blue and Tacit Blue looked extraordinary

The strongest argument in favour of considering a classified aircraft is that genuinely revolutionary aircraft have repeatedly surprised the public once they were declassified.

Have Blue, developed during the mid-1970s as a stealth demonstrator, abandoned conventional aerodynamic styling in favour of sharply faceted surfaces designed to scatter radar energy. Its appearance was unlike any operational fighter of the period, and the programme remained highly classified until the existence of the F-117 gradually became public. DARPA describes Have Blue as the proof-of-concept aircraft that established practical combat stealth and directly led to the F-117 programme.[darpa.mil]darpa.milStealth aircraft | DARPAStealth aircraft | DARPA

Tacit Blue pushed this trend even further. Built by Northrop as a battlefield surveillance demonstrator, it possessed an unusually broad fuselage, buried engines and distinctive V-tail. Contemporary observers later nicknamed it the “Whale” because its rounded, bulky shape looked unlike any conventional military aircraft. It first flew in 1982 but was not publicly acknowledged until 1996, illustrating how successfully an entire flight-test programme could remain secret for more than a decade.[darpa.mil]darpa.milTacit Blue | DARPATacit Blue | DARPA

These aircraft prove several important points:

  • Highly unconventional aircraft can exist without public knowledge.
  • Classified test programmes can remain secret long after flight testing begins.
  • Public expectations of what military aircraft should look like are often outdated compared with classified development.

That historical lesson is significant because it removes one common objection to military explanations: unusual appearance alone is not evidence that an object lay outside known engineering.

Their appearance reflected specific engineering choices

The unusual forms of these aircraft were not arbitrary.

Have Blue’s faceted surfaces were dictated by radar-cross-section calculations rather than aerodynamic elegance. Tacit Blue’s bulky body resulted largely from accommodating a large side-looking radar while maintaining a low radar signature from multiple viewing angles. In both cases, engineers accepted visually strange shapes because they solved identifiable military problems.[darpa.mil]darpa.milStealth aircraft | DARPAStealth aircraft | DARPA

This matters when comparing them with the Cash–Landrum object. A strange silhouette alone says very little. Real secret aircraft generally reveal an understandable relationship between shape and mission once they are declassified.

What the Avrocar reveals about unstable hovering craft

The Avro VZ-9 Avrocar demonstrates a different lesson. Rather than stealth, it explored vertical take-off using a circular platform powered by turbojet-driven lift.

Unlike Have Blue or Tacit Blue, the Avrocar genuinely resembled the popular image of a flying saucer. It attempted to hover by directing engine thrust beneath a disc-shaped vehicle, creating a cushion of air beneath it. During testing, engineers discovered a major stability problem: once the aircraft rose beyond its ground-effect cushion, it became increasingly difficult to control. Persistent oscillations prevented safe transition into practical flight, and the programme was cancelled in 1961 after failing to meet its objectives.[arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Avrocar: a real flying saucerAvrocar: a real flying saucerJuly 24, 2015…Published: July 24, 2015

The Avrocar therefore proves something quite specific:

  • Disc-like military aircraft have been seriously investigated.
  • Hovering flight presents severe control challenges.
  • Experimental vehicles can look remarkably unconventional while remaining entirely human technology.

Just as importantly, it also illustrates how difficult controlled hovering actually is. Rather than supporting claims that any hovering unidentified object was an advanced secret aircraft, the Avrocar highlights how demanding that engineering problem proved even with substantial military funding.

Where historical comparisons stop supporting the theory

Although these programmes establish that secret aircraft existed, the comparison becomes much weaker once the reported characteristics of the Cash–Landrum object are examined.

First, the operational profiles differ substantially. Have Blue and Tacit Blue were runway-launched jet aircraft designed for conventional forward flight. Neither was intended to hover, operate at treetop height for extended periods, or use downward-directed propulsion visible as repeated flame bursts. Their missions centred on stealth and reconnaissance rather than vertical lift.[darpa.mil]darpa.milTacit Blue | DARPATacit Blue | DARPA

Second, the engineering requirements diverge. The reported object combined several demanding characteristics simultaneously:

  • apparent manoeuvrability despite those emissions,
  • extremely high reported radiant heat,
  • and an apparent escort by numerous helicopters.

No known declassified American aircraft programme combines all of those features.

Third, the historical timeline is imperfect. Have Blue had already completed its demonstrator flights before the Cash–Landrum incident, while Tacit Blue’s first flight occurred in 1982, after the December 1980 encounter. Although classified programmes often overlap and other undisclosed projects certainly existed, the known demonstrators most often cited are not direct chronological matches for the reported event.[darpa.mil]darpa.milTacit Blue | DARPATacit Blue | DARPA

What these programmes genuinely contribute to the debate

The most valuable contribution of these historical programmes is methodological rather than identificatory.

They caution against dismissing unusual aerial reports solely because the described aircraft appears unconventional. Military aviation has repeatedly produced vehicles that looked implausible before their existence became public. The history of stealth development demonstrates that secrecy surrounding advanced aerospace technology can be extensive and long-lasting.

At the same time, the same history encourages restraint. Once declassified, programmes such as Have Blue and Tacit Blue fit coherent engineering narratives supported by documentation, flight-test records, photographs, contractor histories and official acknowledgements. Their technical characteristics are understandable in retrospect and correspond closely with their intended military missions.[darpa.mil]darpa.milTacit Blue | DARPATacit Blue | DARPA

The Cash–Landrum incident requires substantially more than proof that secret aircraft existed. It requires evidence that a specific classified aircraft possessed the reported combination of hovering capability, propulsion behaviour, thermal effects and operational support. The historical record of known secret aircraft establishes that secrecy and unconventional design are entirely plausible. It does not, by itself, identify any known programme that reproduces the object described by the witnesses.
