Introduction

Among the physical claims associated with the Cash–Landrum UFO incident, few have received as much attention as the alleged hand-shaped impressions left in the padded dashboard of Betty Cash’s 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass. According to the witnesses, intense heat from the unidentified object softened the vinyl dashboard just as Vickie Landrum braced herself, permanently preserving the shape of her fingers. The dashboard became one of the case’s most frequently cited pieces of physical evidence because, unlike eyewitness testimony, it appeared to offer a tangible object that could be examined.

The difficulty is that the dashboard was never subjected to the kinds of forensic tests needed to determine whether the impressions resulted from exceptional heat, ordinary pressure, pre-existing wear or some combination of factors. The surviving photographs confirm that visible indentations existed, but they do not establish when they formed or what caused them. As a result, the dashboard remains an intriguing but unresolved piece of evidence rather than a verified indicator of extreme thermal exposure.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

What the surviving photographs actually show

Photographs taken during John Schuessler’s investigation clearly show several finger-like depressions in the padded vinyl dashboard on the passenger side of the vehicle. The impressions are genuine visible features of the dashboard rather than artefacts of poor photography. What remains uncertain is their origin.

A significant gap exists between the visual evidence and later descriptions. Betty Cash stated during the August 1981 Bergstrom Air Force Base interview that Vickie’s fingerprints remained “imbedded” in the dashboard after it melted. Schuessler likewise described the dashboard as having moulded itself around Landrum’s fingers. These descriptions encourage readers to imagine sharply defined impressions resembling fingerprints pressed into soft wax or concrete.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

The published photographs, however, depict something more modest. They show shallow finger-shaped indentations in a padded surface rather than detailed fingerprint impressions. The vinyl covering appears depressed, but no visible ridge detail from fingerprints is apparent. Later documentaries reproduced these same dashboard photographs, reinforcing that the physical feature was limited to general finger-shaped depressions rather than anatomically detailed prints.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

This distinction is important because the evidential value depends not on whether marks exist—they clearly do—but on whether those marks require extraordinary heating to explain them.

Heat deformation versus pressure and ordinary wear

The central claim is that radiant heat softened the dashboard enough for Landrum’s hands to deform it permanently while she leaned forward during the encounter. If correct, the dashboard would represent physical evidence that unusually high temperatures reached the vehicle’s interior.

The difficulty is that several more ordinary explanations cannot be excluded from the surviving evidence.

Automotive dashboards of the late 1970s and early 1980s commonly consisted of a vinyl skin bonded over polyurethane foam. Such materials can become more pliable with age, prolonged sunlight and elevated cabin temperatures. Pressure applied to aged foam can leave permanent indentations, particularly if adhesives have deteriorated or the foam has partially collapsed over time. Without laboratory examination of the actual materials, it is impossible to determine whether the observed impressions required abnormal heating.

Equally important, there is no documented evidence establishing the dashboard’s condition before the incident. No photographs are known from before December 1980 showing the relevant area of the dashboard, so investigators cannot demonstrate that the impressions appeared only after the reported encounter. Critics have repeatedly noted that an isolated dent or depression in padded automotive trim could arise through routine use or accidental pressure.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comcash landrum theory analysisBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: Cash-Landrum Theory & Analysis: Unpublished 2002 Wim van Utrecht ArticleNovember 24, 2013…Published: November 24, 2013

The dashboard evidence also sits somewhat uneasily alongside the broader condition of the vehicle reported during the first inspection. Schuessler described the exterior paint, plastic components and tyres as being in generally good condition, with the dashboard impressions standing out as the principal visible anomaly. If heat sufficient to soften the dashboard had affected the interior, investigators might reasonably have looked for corresponding changes in nearby plastics, adhesives or trim. No comprehensive documentation of such associated heat damage has been published.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

None of these observations disproves the witnesses’ account. They simply show that the available physical evidence does not uniquely support the heat explanation.

Tests that could have resolved the handprint claim

The dashboard’s greatest evidential weakness is not necessarily the impressions themselves but the absence of controlled testing while the vehicle was still available.

Several straightforward examinations could have substantially strengthened or weakened the claim:

  • Material identification: Laboratory analysis of the vinyl, foam and adhesives could have revealed whether they had experienced abnormal thermal degradation.
  • Microscopic examination: Close inspection could have determined whether the vinyl surface itself had flowed under heat or whether only the underlying foam had compressed.
  • Comparison testing: An undamaged 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass dashboard could have been subjected to measured pressure at different temperatures to determine how easily similar impressions formed.
  • Mechanical property testing: Hardness and elasticity measurements could have shown whether the dashboard had permanently softened compared with unaffected examples.
  • Chemical analysis: Heat-induced oxidation, polymer breakdown or adhesive failure could potentially have been detected through laboratory methods.

None of these studies is known to have been completed or published. Instead, the dashboard was photographed and described visually, after which the vehicle remained in normal use for years. As the car aged, any opportunity to distinguish incident-related changes from later deterioration became progressively weaker.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

Why the dashboard remains disputed

Supporters of the Cash–Landrum case often cite the dashboard as one of the strongest pieces of physical evidence because it appears to preserve a permanent trace of the reported event. Unlike recollections, the impressions could be photographed repeatedly and shown to investigators.

Sceptical analyses focus on a different issue: evidential standards. A physical object has value only when its origin can be demonstrated. Because investigators lacked baseline photographs, delayed examination for nearly two months, performed no controlled comparison tests and produced no published laboratory analysis of the dashboard materials, the impressions cannot reliably distinguish between extraordinary heating and more ordinary causes.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014

The dashboard therefore illustrates a broader problem within the preservation of the Cash–Landrum vehicle. The visible marks are real, but the critical forensic questions were never answered while meaningful testing was still possible.

What the dashboard evidence ultimately demonstrates

The surviving dashboard photographs establish one narrow fact with reasonable confidence: by the time investigators documented the car, finger-like depressions were present in the passenger-side padded dashboard.

They do not establish that the vinyl melted, that exceptional temperatures were reached inside the vehicle or that the impressions could only have been produced during the reported encounter. Those stronger conclusions would have required timely preservation, documented chain of custody, laboratory examination and comparison with equivalent dashboards.

As a result, the dashboard handprints occupy an intermediate position in the Cash–Landrum evidence. They are neither a fabricated feature nor conclusive proof of extraordinary heat. Instead, they remain an unresolved physical observation whose evidential significance cannot be determined because the necessary forensic work was never carried out.[Blue Blurry Lines]blueblurrylines.comBlue Blurry LinesBlue Blurry Lines: CarMarch 26, 2014…Published: March 26, 2014
