What a Modern Child Interview Would Do Differently

Current forensic interviewing practice has developed considerably since 1981. Although protocols vary internationally, widely used evidence-based approaches share several principles intended to maximise reliable recall while minimising suggestion.

A modern interviewer would typically:

  • interview the child separately from adult witnesses;
  • begin with broad prompts such as “Tell me everything you remember”;
  • avoid introducing details the child has not already mentioned;
  • delay specific questions until after free narrative is exhausted;
  • discourage adults from answering on the child’s behalf;
  • document exactly which information originated from the child rather than from accompanying adults.

These practices are designed to preserve the distinction between spontaneous memory and prompted recollection, allowing later investigators to assess how each factual detail entered the record.

What the Interview Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

The Bergstrom transcript remains an important historical document because it records Colby’s participation relatively early in the public history of the Cash–Landrum case.
